45th edition of the Bünde Onion Market in September 2026 — City festival, folk festival, open-air party, and funfair in the East Westphalian tobacco and cherry town
Since the 1980s, the Bünde Onion Market has been the most important city festival in Bünde — a town of almost 45,000 inhabitants in the Herford district (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, North Rhine-Westphalia), historically shaped by the tobacco industry and sweet cherry cultivation in the Wiehengebirge mountains. The Onion Market is both a district identity festival and a supra-regional crowd-puller: it attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually from the entire Herford district and beyond. The organizer is the Office for City Marketing and Culture of the City of Bünde.
What makes the Onion Market unique is its programmatic mix: folk festival character with beer tents and festive tables, funfair rides for families and youth, several open-air music stages with bands from the regional pop, rock, and Schlager spectrum, tent parties for the partygoers, a flea market on Sunday, and a fair atmosphere throughout the entire festival weekend. This breadth literally appeals to all generations — and is the reason why the festival has been preserved and expanded for over 40 years.
A special feature of recent editions: After years of absence, the Ferris wheel has returned as the festival's landmark. Erected in the center of Eschstraße, it has become a widely visible symbol of the Bünde Onion Market — and a magnetic point for family photos. Alongside it, other classics spin: dodgem cars, chain carousel, haunted house, children's carousels.
One of the most impressive program points: the grand fireworks display on Friday evening around 9 p.m. — Bünde does not let its Onion Market begin without a pyrotechnic opening. The fireworks are launched from the Bünde roof and are visible from large parts of the city center.
On the Sunday of the Onion Market weekend, the shops in Bünde's city center open between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. — a long-standing tradition of Sunday shopping that connects the festival with local retail. Sunday is also the most relaxed festival day — more family-friendly than the party nights of Friday and Saturday.
The name refers to the East Westphalian tradition of the Onion Market — historically, onion markets in rural regions were the local marketing point for farmers from the Wiehengebirge. Today, the festival is no longer primarily an onion market, but the name is preserved and lovingly staged: some stalls offer onion cake, onion bread, and regional specialties.
Bünde is located in the foothills of the Wiehengebirge in the Herford district. By train: Bünde is accessible with Regional-Express RE 60 and Regionalbahn RB 71 from Bielefeld, Osnabrück, Herford, and Minden — the train station is within walking distance of the city center. By car: A 30 exit Bünde, A 2 exit Herford-Bünde. During the Onion Market, the city center is partially closed — the city marketing advice is: use public transport.
The 45th edition of the Bünde Onion Market retains the proven format: four days of folk festival and funfair in the Bünde city center around Eschstraße. The exact dates for 2026 will be published by the City of Bünde in early 2026 — according to festival calendar tradition, the event falls on the last full September weekend.
Around 150 exhibitors, food stalls, and showmen will set up stalls and rides. The Ferris wheel and dodgem cars characterize the festival scene. The fireworks on Friday evening are among the highlights — followed by open-air concerts and tent parties. Sunday from 1 p.m. onwards, the city center shops are open.
