Catholic tradition in the Neunkirchen district – procession through the 'Village in the Sky'
In the predominantly Catholic Saarland, Corpus Christi is one of the most important church holidays of the year – traditionally marked by processions in which the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the streets. In Münchwies, a district of 2,000 inhabitants in the district town of Neunkirchen, this custom is particularly intensely observed.
Corpus Christi 2026 falls on Thursday, June 4th. On this day, the High Mass begins in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Kirchstraße 38), followed by the procession through the town and the subsequent parish festival on the church square.
After the festive service in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, the procession moves through Münchwies. The route is marked by four festive altars, at each of which a blessing is given. The route traditionally leads through the main streets of the district, past the front gardens of the residents, who decorate their houses with birch branches and flowers in the days leading up to Corpus Christi.
After the procession, the parish festival begins on the church square. Here, the parish's associations and church groups take over the catering: Bratwurst and Schwenker (grilled sausages), cakes and crêpes, beer and wine. The proceeds traditionally go towards parish work – church renovation, youth work, pilgrimages.
Münchwies is located on a hill above Neunkirchen, at an altitude of 350 meters – hence the nickname 'Village in the Sky'. With just under 2,000 inhabitants, it is one of Neunkirchen's smaller districts, but very active ecclesiastically. The parish is part of the larger parish of Hl. Dreifaltigkeit Neunkirchen, led by Pastor Markus Krastl. The parish motto is: 'Living. together and for each other'.
As in many regions, Corpus Christi is no longer a mass public holiday like it used to be. But where tradition is lived – as in Münchwies – it provides orientation. Anyone who wants to experience a real Saarland Corpus Christi procession is in the right place here: dignified, festive, locally rooted.
