Pentecost in the Saarland — Wiebelskirchen Fairground

Pentecost is traditionally high season for funfairs in the Saarland. While others drive away for the long weekend, the people of Wiebelskirchen stay home and celebrate on their district's fairground. The Pfingstkirmes has been a firm fixture in the Saarland's event calendar for decades and is one of the liveliest folk festivals in the third decade of May.

Over 60 Attractions

What distinguishes the Pfingstkirmes is the size of its showman offerings: Over 60 attractions are spread across the festival grounds. Dodgems, classic carousels, swing rides, a Ferris wheel, and modern high-rise rides stand alongside children's carousels, shooting galleries, throwing stalls, lottery stalls, and nostalgic games like can toss and egg toss. In between, the inevitable stalls with candied almonds, crêpes, gingerbread hearts, bratwurst, and Schwenker (sausage skewers).

Fireworks on Saturday Evening

The biggest highlight, however, is the fireworks display on Saturday evening, which bathes the Pentecost sky over Wiebelskirchen in all colours. Families from the entire Neunkirchen district come specifically for this event, secure a spot with a good view early on, and are among the thousands who marvel at the fireworks together.

Wiebelskirchen — History and Identity

Wiebelskirchen is a district of Neunkirchen with its own history. The formerly independent village was incorporated into Neunkirchen in 1974 but has retained its distinct character. The fairground is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport from Neunkirchen's city centre. The tourism association and local clubs have been committed to preserving the Pfingstkirmes for decades — it is living tradition, not a tourist construct.

Neunkirchen in the Neunkirchen District

Neunkirchen is the second-largest city in the Saarland and the district capital of the district of the same name. The former industrial city with its famous Neunkirchen ironworks is now an important central hub with the well-known Saarpark-Center as a shopping destination. Folk festivals like the Pfingstkirmes in Wiebelskirchen, the summer funfair in Dudweiler, or the Kohlhof sports festival contribute significantly to the community life of the districts.

Pfingstkirmes Wiebelskirchen — edition 2026

The Pfingstkirmes Wiebelskirchen 2026 will take place from Saturday, May 23 to Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, on the Wiebelskirchen fairground. Three days of folk festival with over 60 attractions, classic rides, children's carousels, shooting galleries, food stalls, and the traditional fireworks display on Saturday evening.

As in previous years, the Pfingstkirmes will run throughout the extended weekend. Opening on Saturday afternoon, fireworks on Saturday evening, Sunday of Pentecost and Whit Monday as the main funfair days with a family day on Monday. Free admission, individual rides at typical fair prices.

The exact showman offering for 2026 will traditionally be announced by the city of Neunkirchen from spring 2026. Expect classics like dodgems and several children's carousels, plus shooting galleries, throwing stalls, lottery stalls, culinary stalls, and high-rise rides.
