Whitsun Festival with Spreewald Market and Wendish Tradition
Schmogrow-Fehrow is located in the Amt Burg (Spreewald) district, Spree-Neiße, right in the heart of the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The municipality belongs to the traditional settlement area of the Sorbs/Wends — the West Slavic minority that has preserved its language, traditional costume, and customs in Lusatia for over a thousand years. This cultural identity is still palpable in the village today: bilingual place signs, old traditional costumes for special occasions, and a vibrant club scene.
The Traditionsverein Schmogrow was founded on February 11, 1994, and has since been dedicated to preserving the Wendish and German traditions of the village — from Spreewald costumes to Bullenschätzen (a traditional game) and communal celebrations. In 2024, the club celebrated its 30th anniversary with a grand festival that brought together the diversity of local culture in one day. The festival has since become a recurring highlight in the Schmogrow calendar.
The festival begins on Whitsun Sunday at 10 a.m. with a musical morning pint — the Peitz musicians set the tone. This is followed by a colourful stage programme featuring traditional dances in Spreewald costume, the Liederkranz male choir, a performance by the Wendish-German kindergarten "Małe Myški" from Fehrow/Prjawoz, and the singing Spreewald innkeeper Günni. A Spreewald market with regional specialties, an oldtimer and tractor exhibition, and the traditional Bullenschätzen round off the day. For the youngest guests, there's a bouncy castle and face painting.
Schmogrow-Fehrow is situated within the Spreewald's network of waterways — visitors to the anniversary festival should combine their day with a punt boat trip through the canals or a walk through the typical Spreewald landscape. Burg (Spreewald), the nearest larger town, is only a few kilometres away and offers further tourist attractions. The Schmogrow festival represents the beauty that you won't find in any guidebook: living village culture in one of Germany's most unique cultural landscapes.
On Whitsun Sunday, May 19, 2026, from 10 a.m., the Traditionsverein Schmogrow once again invites you to its festival day at the Schmogrow open-air stage by the sports field. In the spirit of the successful anniversary edition of the previous year, the festival combines Wendish-German tradition, a Spreewald market, and conviviality.
The day kicks off with a musical morning pint featuring the Peitz musicians. Throughout the day, a colourful stage programme showcases dances in Spreewald costume, the Liederkranz male choir, and other local groups. At the Spreewald market along the festival grounds, you'll find regional specialties — from fresh Plinsen and Butterquark-Stullen to pickled cucumbers from Spreewald manufactories. An exhibition of oldtimers and tractors, along with the traditional Bullenschätzen, are the unusual highlights of the day. Free admission.
