Four Days of Spring Festival in Bünde

Bünde, a town of around 46,000 inhabitants in the Herford district (Detmold administrative region, East Westphalia), celebrates the 46th edition of its traditional spring festival from May 14 to 17, 2026. The event benefits from a special constellation in 2026: Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14 – the city uses the public holiday as an additional festival day and extends the festival to four days for the first time. Usually, the spring festival lasts three days.

Opening with Mayor Rutenkröger

The official opening will be performed on Thursday, May 14, at 4 PM by Mayor Susanne Rutenkröger on the Rathausplatz. The opening will be accompanied by the Big Band ensemble of the municipal music school. Afterwards, the entire festival grounds in Bünde's city center will open – Rathausplatz, Bahnhofstraße, surrounding squares.

150 Stalls, Floral Display Areas, Amusement Rides

Around 150 stalls and amusement rides are spread across the city center area: carousels, Ferris wheel, bumper cars, strongman games, dice stalls, candy stalls, snack stands, beer tent. A special feature of the Bünde Spring Festival is the floral display areas by local landscape gardeners and nurseries – the city of Bünde advertises with the slogan: "This backdrop is a showcase for local landscape gardeners and nurseries and is unique in the region.".

Music Program and Sunday Shopping

The 2026 music program includes performances by local sports, dance, and music groups over all four days. On Friday evening, the regional party band Sister Act will perform on the main stage. Live DJs and karaoke will provide the atmosphere on the other evenings. Traditional cake sales by Bünde schools complement the culinary diversity with bratwurst, fries, crepes, lángos, and many other festival classics. Sunday is a shopping day – the city center shops are open from 1 PM to 6 PM.

Getting There and Bus Shuttle

The Stadtwerke Bünde will run extended special services on Thursday and Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, all public transport in Bünde is free to use – a service initiative by the city for festival visitors. Those arriving by car can use the parking lots at the Pauluskirchen-Parkplatz (accessible only via Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße) and the designated park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of the city.

Traditional City Festival

The Bünde Spring Festival dates back to 1979 – making the city of Bünde one of the older spring festival events in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Over the decades, the festival has developed into one of the largest Volksfeste (popular festivals) in the Herford district, attracting around 60,000 visitors over the weekend. The business association and the Bünde marketing community are co-organizers.
