Hamburg's Floating Open-Air Cinema

The Binnenalster Filmfest is one of Hamburg's more unusual events: a floating screen is anchored on the Binnenalster – the small Alster basin in the city center, framed by commercial and hotel buildings. The audience sits on Jungfernstieg and watches the water from above, with the illuminated facades of the city center in the background.

Prelude to Filmfest Hamburg

The Binnenalster Filmfest runs in the week before the major Filmfest Hamburg and is jointly organized by Filmfest Hamburg gGmbH, City Management Hamburg, and the Verein Lebendiger Jungfernstieg e.V. The selection is small but curated: usually four films, often with a thematic common thread (friendship, magical creatures, generations, film classics).

Free Admission, Open Seating

Admission is free; seating is on the open promenade on Jungfernstieg – everyone can find their standing or step-seating spot. Screening starts at 8:15 PM; films begin at dusk. In case of rain, screenings may be postponed; updates on the Filmfest Hamburg website.
