3.8 km swim — 180 km bike — 42.195 km run in the heart of the Hanseatic city
Hamburg has hosted the IRONMAN since 2017 — the world's most prestigious triathlon over the classic long distance (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, 42.195 km running). 2026 marks the ninth edition and, at the same time, the official European Championship of the series — a status that makes the field of participants even more elite than usual.
What sets the Hamburg IRONMAN apart is the radical urbanity of the course. Other IRONMAN competitions take place in natural settings — Hamburg offers the image of triathlon in the heart of a major city.
The spectacular mass start is at 6:30 AM at Jungfernstieg. Thousands of athletes jump into the waters of the Binnenalster, swim through the narrow Lombardsbrücke into the Außenalster, complete a loop there, and return. One of the few big-city swim courses in the triathlon circus.
From the transition area near the Alster, the course leads through the city in two laps. New for 2026: The course leaves the Bergedorf region and instead leads via Klein Flottbeker Weg and Holztwiete into the western part of Hamburg. A total of approximately 400 meters of elevation gain, traditionally including multiple crossings of the Köhlbrandbrücke.
The run course is divided into four laps and leads athletes along the western Alster riverbanks through the city centre via Gänsemarkt, Jungfernstieg, and Rathausmarkt. The four-lap solution guarantees a high spectator density — families, clubs, and tourists cheer on the athletes. The finish line is on Rathausmarkt: crossing the finish line here after 225 km earns the classic call "You are an IRONMAN".
The swim, transition area, and finish are located in the districts of Altstadt and Neustadt in the Hamburg-Mitte borough. The bike course touches almost all districts of the Hanseatic city — from HafenCity via Altona to Eimsbüttel. For one day, the city becomes a competition area.
The overall time limit is 17 hours. Entry fees typically range between 600 and 800 Euros and include nutrition, a finisher medal, a shirt, and medical support. Recommended preparation time: 6 to 12 months of structured training. For many amateur athletes, the IRONMAN Hamburg is the sporting event of a lifetime.
Triathlon has a strong tradition in Hamburg — the Olympic distance has been held for years at the ITU World Triathlon Series. The IRONMAN is the logical extension: longer distances, a grander staging. With its status as the European Championship in 2026, the Hamburg competition once again attracts top athletes from all over the world.
The 2026 edition is also the European Championship of the IRONMAN series, making it particularly prestigious. The bike course has been revised: Bergedorf is no longer part of the course; instead, there's a longer section via Klein Flottbeker Weg and Holztwiete in western Hamburg.
Organized by the IRONMAN Group in cooperation with the City of Hamburg. Registration is via ironman.com/im-hamburg. Live broadcast and intermediate results during the race.

If you want to watch as a Hamburg resident: bring a folding chair, sun protection, and a change of clothes. The race lasts over 16 hours, and the finish line is visited late into the night. The atmosphere at the finish of the last participants is legendary.
