A journey back to the 19th century in Germany's smallest Hanseatic town — market, costumes, and stork tours
Werben (Elbe) — this small Hanseatic town on the lower Elbe, in the Stendal district of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is one of North Germany's most unusual destinations. With only around 1,200 inhabitants, it is considered Germany's smallest Hanseatic town, yet it boasts a Gothic cityscape that can rival its larger siblings: a late-Gothic St. John's Church, medieval town walls, and brick houses from various centuries. Once a year — on the first weekend in July — time travels back in this little town: for the Biedermeier Summer Market.
The idea to host this unusual themed festival in Werben was conceived from 2006 onwards by the Arbeitskreis Werbener Altstadt e.V. — a dedicated citizens' association committed to preserving the historic townscape. The Biedermeier period — that era of style between the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848 — fits Werben like a tailor-made gown: bourgeois, tranquil, and characterised by a cosy, cultivated lifestyle. Werben's townhouses mostly date from the 17th to 19th centuries, and the town's silhouette has changed little since Goethe's time.
On the market square at the foot of St. John's Church, around 30 stalls gather over the weekend — traders, artisans, and artists, all in Biedermeier costumes: hoop skirts, top hats, lace bonnets, waistcoats. Fabrics, leather goods, handicrafts, jewellery, antique books, toys, incense, honey, and all kinds of arts and crafts are sold. On stages, musicians and theatre groups perform works from the Biedermeier era — Schubert songs, Mendelssohn chamber music, plays from the Burgtheater repertoire of that time, dances based on historical choreography.
A special attraction: the stork tours. Werben is one of the communities in Saxony-Anhalt with the most storks; stork nests can be seen on many rooftops. During the market, stork experts lead interested guests through the old town, explaining the birds' way of life, nest density, and nature conservation. Church tours of St. John's are also part of the programme. For children, there is a play street in Schadewachten-Gasse with historical games, skill stations, and craft workshops.
The gastronomy is also in keeping with the theme: At Café Lämpel, you can enjoy 'Werbener Weiße' (the local beer mix drink), regional fruit wines, soups, tarte flambée, and lard pastries. The Commandeurhaus serves hearty dishes and the local beer Johannesgold. Under the lime trees in front of the church, a choir runs its own café with coffee and cake.
From the 13th to the 17th century, Werben belonged to the Hanseatic League, making it part of the large North German trading network. The town, small today, was quite economically significant back then — river skippers from Hamburg, Stendal, Tangermünde, and Magdeburg docked here. The town wall with the mighty Elbe Gate is preserved and is one of the finest examples of North German brick Gothic architecture. Visitors to the festival not only experience an original themed event but also get an impression of how German urban history can remain alive in a microcosm.
As every year, the festival takes place on the first weekend of July — in 2026, this will be July 4th and 5th. The organizers are again the Arbeitskreis Werbener Altstadt e.V. together with the Hanseatic town of Werben.
The detailed programme for 2026, including the list of exhibitors and artists, will be published from May/June 2026 on werben-elbe.de. Based on previous years, you can expect the usual programme points.
