One church, six concerts, one Elbe summer
DEICHKLANG is an intimately special concert series that takes place every summer in the Kulturkirche Räbel — a former village church that has been repurposed as a cultural venue. Räbel is a district of the Hanseatic city of Werben (Elbe) in the Stendal district, located directly on the Elbe dyke in the western Altmark. It is precisely this location and atmosphere — the Romanesque church, the view of the Elbe riverbank, the tranquility of the Altmark — that make DEICHKLANG one of the most charming cultural formats in Saxony-Anhalt.
The programming is programmatically interdisciplinary: tango and bandoneon meet audio plays with accordion, song recitals meet Armenian chamber music. Six events spread throughout the summer, always on Saturdays or Fridays at 6 p.m. This makes DEICHKLANG more of a series than a festival — but a festival in its concentration and ambition.
Six evenings from June to September
The 2026 program once again combines genres. The series kicks off on June 6 with Thomas Stein and Edgar Kaul presenting the song program “Zwischen Akkord und Vers” — vocals, poetry, and guitar. In July, an audio play evening dedicated to Karl Valentin follows, and in August, a tango evening with the Duo Tangente. In September, there are two more dates: an audio play about Hans Christian Andersen, and finally, on September 26, a concert by the TRIO ANIMATO with Armenian and Eastern European chamber music — this concert is part of the larger Musikfest Altmark.
Culture in the Altmark — a balancing act between world heritage and province
The Altmark is the most rural region of Saxony-Anhalt: vast skies, brick Gothic architecture, old Hanseatic cities like Salzwedel, Tangermünde, Stendal, and Werben (Elbe). Offering a sophisticated, interdisciplinary curated cultural program here is an achievement — and DEICHKLANG has shown for years that it works. The Kulturkirche Räbel has become a fixed point in the Altmark's cultural landscape, alongside concert venues like the Stiftskirche Tangermünde or the Soolquell Salzwedel.
