Advent Atmosphere in the Saarschleifenland

Beckingen, with just under 15,000 inhabitants, the main town of the municipality of the same name in the district of Merzig-Wadern, is one of those Saarland places that lie modestly in the background all year round – and have their big moment on the second Advent weekend. A Christmas market then emerges around Beckingen Town Hall and the Deutschherrenhalle, combining the charm of a village Advent market with the standards of a curated arts and crafts market.

The Double Structure of the Festival

What distinguishes the market from many others is its spatially separated double structure:

• The Christmas market takes place around Beckingen Town Hall – with the classic mulled wine and bratwurst stands, live music stage, and festive lighting.
• The Arts and Crafts Market of the Kultur- und Heimatverein Beckingen takes place concurrently in the nearby Deutschherrenhalle – a historic hall where artists, craftspeople, and painters from the region exhibit and sell their works. Here you will find wood carvings, handmade toys, ceramics, jewelry, textile art, and much more – a clear contrast to large commercial markets.

The Large Nativity Scene Exhibition

A special feature of the Beckingen Christmas market is the annual nativity scene exhibition with cribs from all over the world – an eye-catcher for anyone interested in folk art and the preservation of religious customs. The collection ranges from Alpine carvings to Peruvian clay nativity scenes. An event that reaches the level of a small ethnographic museum contribution.

Miners' Winter Market – The Second Venue

An additional highlight of the Beckingen Advent is the Bergmännischer Wintermarkt (Miners' Winter Market) at the Grube Düppenweiler – a former copper mine in the Düppenweiler district, accessible today as a museum. Here, an illuminated miner's pyramid dominates the market scene; winter dishes, mulled wine, and small gift stalls shape the atmosphere. St. Nicholas visits the winter market on Sunday. Those visiting the Beckingen market can easily visit this second location afterward – they are only a few kilometers apart.

The market is organized by the municipality of Beckingen and the Kultur- und Heimatverein Beckingen, with the support of many other local clubs and institutions (Vereinigtes Blasorchester Beckingen, JUZ Beckingen, local parish).
