Christmas market with half-timbered huts, a 12-meter-high fir tree, and a singing angel between Mönckebergstraße and Thalia Theater
Anyone entering Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz in autumn and suddenly feeling forest floor underfoot has found the Winterwald. For years, Hamburg's Christmas market has relied on a memorable concept: dense fir trees instead of open rows of stalls, half-timbered huts instead of standard stands, real forest floor instead of sober asphalt. It consciously distinguishes itself from other Hamburg Christmas markets – while Jungfernstieg focuses on white elegance and Rathausmarkt on tradition, the Winterwald is the grounded, nature-oriented version.
At the center of the square stands a twelve-meter-high fir tree with approximately 40,000 lights – one of the largest in the city. Above the stalls, the "singing angel" hovers at a height of about five meters: Twice a day, the curtain opens, and the angel performs Christmas carols. A small, very photogenic spectacle that particularly impresses children and tourists.
The assortment is a mix of classic Christmas market repertoire and individual craft stalls: jewelry, glasswork, wood carvings, felt, ceramics, leather goods. For culinary delights, expect mulled wine, punch, candied almonds, gingerbread, along with hearty bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), and Flammkuchen. The market is noticeably less focused on mass tourism than the nearby Rathausmarkt – more Northern German than Bavarian après-ski feeling.
Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz is located in the Altstadt quarter of the Hamburg-Mitte district, directly on Mönckebergstraße – Hamburg's central shopping mile. Nestled between Karstadt to the east, Thalia Theater to the south, and Perle-Passage to the north, the market benefits from the high foot traffic. It's only a five-minute walk from Rathausmarkt and ten minutes from Jungfernstieg. This makes the Winterwald a logical stop on the classic Hamburg Christmas market tour in the state of Hamburg.
In 2026, the Winterwald remains true to itself: a fir tree atmosphere in the middle of Mönckebergstraße, small half-timbered huts, the iconic fir tree, and the singing angel. The market is organized by RK & BF Hanse Event Veranstaltungs GmbH, which has consistently implemented the concept for years.
The assortment focuses – arts and crafts, glass, jewelry, street food, mulled wine – are expected to be maintained at the same level in 2026. The organizer will provide information on exact daily opening hours and possible special promotions from late autumn 2026.
