Carnival in Paderborn — the Ostwestfalen Version
Paderborn, a cathedral city and university town with around 152,000 inhabitants, is located in the traditionally Catholic-conservative dominated region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe — an area not known for exuberant carnival celebrations. However, a handful of dedicated carnival enthusiasts keep the carnival tradition alive here — and the most visible symbol is the annual Paderborn Carnival Parade. In 2026, it will be the 22nd edition, demonstrating how a small initiative has grown into an established city event and one of the largest carnival parades in Ostwestfalen.
Hasi-Palau-Paderborn e.V.
The organizer is the carnival club Hasi-Palau-Paderborn e.V. — the name playfully combines the club's rabbit mascot with a Rhineland carnival battle cry. The club is the driving force behind the parade, organizing the float builders, coordinating the participating dance troupes and walking groups, securing permits, and managing logistics. Over the years, carnival clubs from across the Paderborn district and parts of the Sauerland and Hochstift regions have joined the procession.
Start at 2:14 PM at Maspernplatz
The symbolic start time is a carnival nod to the number 11 (1+4+1+4 = 10, plus the usual carnival hour of 11 AM = not quite, but 2:14 PM plays with the double digit). The starting point is Maspernplatz, near the Pader spring. From there, the parade winds through Paderborn's city center, passing the cathedral (from the outside — the identity of the Hochstift region is palpable), across Rathausplatz, and through the shopping streets, before returning to Maspernplatz after approximately 2.5 hours.

What You'll Experience at the Parade
- Carnival Floats — self-built, often politically or regionally themed floats with sound systems, dancers, and throwing goods.
- Walking Groups — clubs, schools, and local initiatives in matching costumes.
- Dance Troupes — youth troupes, funkengarden, and prince's troupes in traditional carnival uniforms.
- Music Bands — brass bands and marching bands.
- Throwing Goods — "Kamellen" (sweets), bouquets, flowers, small gifts — welcome loot, especially for children.
- Carnival Calls — from "Alaaf" (Rhineland) to "Helau" and local Paderborn calls.
Carnival, Helau, and the Hochstift
Paderborn is part of the historic Hochstift Paderborn — a predominantly Catholic region whose culture oscillates between the joyful Rhineland tradition and Ostwestfalen's pragmatism. The carnival here reflects this: not as effervescent as in Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Mainz, but certainly lively and with its own distinct identity. The carnival parade is the most visible sign that northern Westphalia is also "carnival-capable.".
Paderborn Around Carnival Day
For those extending their stay: the Paderborn Cathedral (Hohe Domkirche St. Maria, St. Liborius und St. Kilian), the Pader springs (the shortest river source in Germany), the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (the world's largest computer museum), or an evening meal in the historic old town are all excellent options.
