Pentecost Culture Walk along the Pader
The Pader, at around 4 kilometers, is officially Germany's shortest river. The Paderborn Cultural Office has been leveraging this unique feature since 2010: once a year, on Pentecost Sunday, the course of the Pader from its springs at Padersee to Schloss Neuhaus becomes a continuous stage. Over 30 artists from Germany and abroad occupy 21 stations, while the public strolls or uses the shuttle service along the axis.
Pader-Kultour is not a classic open-air stage, but an itinerant parcours. Each station has its own format and its own artist. You will find:
The list of participants is international: in 2026, acts from France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain are announced. The exact program map will be available from May 2026 in the festival's interactive web app (kulturamt-paderborn.lineupr.com/pader-kultour-2026) — with artist information, navigation assistance, and a personal program planner.
The start is traditionally around the City Library at Abdinghof. From there, the axis leads over the Pader springs, through the Heinz Nixdorf Park, along the Schützenwiese and the Pader meadows, all the way to the expansive Schlosspark Neuhaus. Five of the stations are designated as workshops and street food points — here you can take a break, chat with the artists, and grab a bite to eat.
Those who don't want to cover the entire route on foot can use the free Padersprinter shuttle with five stops along the axis. The buses run frequently — no waiting stress.
Pader-Kultour is considered a model format for decentralized cultural work in North Rhine-Westphalia: it attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually to a district that is otherwise rather quiet (Schloss Neuhaus is on the western outskirts of Paderborn), brings international artists to a rather medium-sized audience, and makes the river visible as a source of identity. The free web app with an interactive map has become standard — many other cities are adopting this model.
Pentecost Sunday 2026 once again becomes a cultural Pentecost in Paderborn. From 2 PM to 7 PM, acts and installations fill the Pader axis, while museums (Diocesan Museum, Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum, City Museum) are open from 10 AM to 6 PM. Five workshop and street food stations punctuate the walk. The app map with all acts will be online from May.
21 stations between the City Library and Schlosspark Neuhaus. Example genre lines (complete artist list from May 2026 in the app):
