48th edition of the spa town's largest Volksfest — August 21–23, 2026
With around 5,500 inhabitants, Bad Lobenstein is a small but traditional spa town in the south of the Saale-Orla district in Eastern Thuringia. The town lies on the edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale Nature Park and is primarily known for its thermal springs and the modern ARDESIA-Therme (opened in 2008). The landmark is the ruin of the Old Castle on the Schlossberg. The Spa Park with its old trees and the Market Square with historic buildings form the venues for the annual Market Festival — a tradition that has been established since the late 1970s.
For decades, the Market Festival has been the most important event in Bad Lobenstein's calendar. 2026 will celebrate the 48th edition — almost half a century of tradition. The festival spans several locations: The Market Square hosts the main stage and amusement rides, adjacent streets are lined with food and market stalls, the ARDESIA-Therme grounds feature family programs, bands and acoustic acts play in the Spa Park, and there are water activities and fishing days at the Angling Club's pond. This division across multiple areas makes the Market Festival more than just a town festival — it's the entire town celebrating.
The program combines three pillars: Bands from Eastern Thuringia, Saxony, and the Vogtland region play on several stages — rock, pop, Schlager, and folk music. The regional cuisine ranges from Thuringian dumplings to bratwurst, Rostbrätel, game dishes from the Thuringian Forest, and sweet specialties and cakes from the club kitchens. The club presentations showcase the vibrant club scene of the spa town — sports clubs, fire departments, shooting clubs, carnival clubs, angling clubs, cultural associations. This makes the Market Festival a celebration *by* the people of Bad Lobenstein, not just *for* tourists.
The Saale-Orla district is located in the south of Eastern Thuringia, between the Vogtland (Saxony) and Upper Franconia (Bavaria). Bad Lobenstein is the southern gateway to the region. Visitors to the Market Festival often combine the festival weekend with a hike in the Slate Mountains — for example, to the Lobenstein Castle ruins, to the Bleiloch Dam (Europe's largest reservoir by water volume), or into the idyllic Wisenta Valley. A visit to the ARDESIA-Therme is also popular — a late summer spa day with the warm brine spring. For generations, the Market Festival has been *the* date in the spa town's annual calendar.
The 48th edition of the Market Festival in 2026 spans three festival days and several locations in Bad Lobenstein. The town of Bad Lobenstein coordinates the program together with local clubs. The division of the festival across multiple areas (Market Square, Spa Park, ARDESIA-Therme, Angling Club pond) creates different atmospheres — from a Volksfest on the Market Square to an acoustic concert in the Spa Park.
