Traditional Pentecost Regatta in canoe racing on the Bleiloch Reservoir — Saale-Orla District
The Pfingst-Regatta Bad Lobenstein is traditionally held on the Pentecost weekend on the Bleiloch Reservoir — Germany's largest reservoir by volume —. The organiser is the Wassersportverein Rosenthal Blankenstein e.V., one of Thuringia's most traditional canoe and rowing clubs. Athletes of various age groups meet for canoe racing: single kayak (K1), double kayak (K2), canoe (C1), and relays over different distances.
Pentecost marks the start of the season in the Thuringian Slate Mountains — the days are getting longer, the lake is warm enough for the competitions, and the region is coming alive. In addition to the sporting competition, the Pfingst-Regatta is one of the convivial highlights of the spa town's spring programme: angler meadows with barbecue stands, boathouses on the shore, and a packed programme at the landing stages bring athletes, families, and onlookers together.
Bad Lobenstein is located in the Saale-Orla District in the south of the state of Thuringia, at the transition from the Thuringian Slate Mountains to the Franconian Forest. The town is a state-recognised moor spa with an Ardesia-Therme, Lobenstein Castle, and a dense network of hiking trails around the Bleiloch Reservoir. Those arriving for the regatta can easily combine water sports with a visit to the thermal baths or a boat trip on the reservoir.
The Bleiloch Reservoir is fed by the Saale river, which flows through southern Thuringia and offers one of the most beautiful water sports areas in Central Germany in its slate mountain valleys. With the Pfingst-Regatta, the local water sports clubs set a sign for a long tradition of canoe racing on the upper Saale.
The Pfingst-Regatta 2026 falls on May 23rd and 24th, 2026. Organised by the Wassersportverein Rosenthal Blankenstein e.V., it invites canoeists from Thuringia and Central Germany to the season opener on the Bleiloch Reservoir. On the programme: competitions in the classic disciplines of canoe racing — K1, K2, C1, relays — over various distances.
Pentecost on the Bleiloch Reservoir means long spring days, warm water, and a region awakening after the winter months. Athletes camp or stay in guesthouses and boathouses around the reservoir. The regatta is part of the official event calendar of the town of Bad Lobenstein, which accompanies the Pentecost weekend with additional programmes around the spa town.
