Traditional festival of the volunteer fire brigade in the Vogelsberg
In Hesse's Vogelsberg district, the bakehouse (Backhaus) holds special significance: almost every village has its own communal wood-fired oven, which is still fired up regularly today – whether for supplying villagers with bread or for festivals like the annual Backhausfest. The Backhausfest Einartshausen has been organized since 1983 by the Einartshausen Volunteer Fire Brigade, originally in collaboration with the Protestant women's group.
The culinary centerpiece is the wood-fired Backhaushaxen – crispy roasted pork knuckles that must be pre-ordered and are prepared according to a recipe perfected over decades. In addition, there are steaks, bratwurst, and fries from the grill, but most importantly, the Hessian classics Schmierschel (a smoked sausage specialty) and Zwiebelkuchen. Freshly tapped beer is served at the fire brigade's counter.
Einartshausen is one of the districts of the town of Schotten, located in the Vogelsberg volcanic region – the largest contiguous volcanic area in Central Europe. The town of Schotten, with its 19 districts, lies at the foot of the Hoherodskopf (764 m), one of Hesse's most famous hiking areas. With around 300 inhabitants, Einartshausen is a typical small Vogelsberg village where club life, centered around the fire brigade and church, shapes the social fabric.
Over the years, the Backhausfest has become an important source of income for the fire brigade's club fund. The proceeds have financed numerous equipment purchases for the brigade over the decades. For the village community, the festival is also one of the most important social events of the year – a meeting point for long-time residents, those returning home, and guests from the neighboring villages of Götzen, Sichenhausen, and Schotten itself.
The program is spread over two days: starting on Saturday at 5 PM with the tapping of the keg, food, and music from recordings or by the fire brigade band. Sunday features a traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen) with lunch. Free admission.
The 2026 Backhausfest will again be celebrated in its traditional format: Saturday evening opening at the fire station (Ludwigstraße 16-18), Sunday continuation with morning pint and lunch. The Backhaushaxen will be prepared in the village's own wood-fired oven, as has been customary for decades, and must be pre-ordered.
Pre-orders for Backhaushaxen are accepted by the Einartshausen Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Free admission. Backhaushaxen with pre-order. Food and drinks at village prices.
