Art Tour through Die Alte Bürger

Die Alte Bürger is the historic trendy street in Bremerhaven's city center: Wilhelminian-era facades, small shops, cafés, bars, and galleries characterize the quarter. Once a year, this street transforms into a huge open-air museum. During the artspace bremerhaven festival, around 30 international artists move into vacant shops, stairwells, apartments, and onto the street to showcase their work in unusual locations.

Interdisciplinary and Site-Specific

The festival sees itself as an interdisciplinary platform. Installations, performances, paintings, video, and sound works are presented – always with a connection to the location. The artists are selected by the "Die Alte Bürger" association in cooperation with the cultural office of the Seestadt Bremerhaven and the afz neighborhood management. Individuals and collectives from all over the world can apply; several hundred applications are received each year.

A Festival with Professional Support

What makes artspace bremerhaven special: The selected artists receive exhibition fees, material grants, a travel expense allowance, and accommodation on site. This elevates the festival beyond classic open calls and makes it a serious career stepping stone for emerging positions.

Why Bremerhaven?

Bremerhaven is a city of contrasts – maritime history, emigration port, shipyards, structural change. Die Alte Bürger as a quarter embodies this in a confined space. The festival utilizes precisely this tension: Between vacancy and new beginnings, between local color and international art language, works emerge that you would never see in a classic white cube gallery. Admission is free, and the tour takes two to five hours depending on your pace.

artspace bremerhaven — edition 2026

The ninth edition of artspace bremerhaven takes place on August 22 and 23, 2026, in the Die Alte Bürger quarter. Around 30 international artists will once again be selected from over 300 applications to fill vacant spaces, backyards, stairwells, and private apartments with contemporary art. Applications are possible until March 15, 2026.

Ninth Edition – Art in Unusual Places

In 2026, artspace bremerhaven will transform the trendy street Die Alte Bürger into a vibrant art space for the ninth time. The festival seeks site-specific, experimental, and contemporary projects that open up new perspectives on public space. Artists from all disciplines are invited – individually or as a collective.

Funding Conditions

Selected positions will receive an exhibition fee, a material grant, accommodation in Bremerhaven, and a travel expense allowance of up to 1,000 euros. The application period runs until March 15, 2026, via the festival website.

Festival Weekend

On both days, you can move freely through the quarter; a festival map is available at several information points. Performances and openings will be announced at fixed times. Bars and cafés in Die Alte Bürger are integrated into the festival weekend – a tour with art, music, and gastronomy.
