A Sky Full of Colours on the Weser Dyke
If you love looking up at the sky, the Bremerhaven Kite Festival is your weekend destination: On the Weser Dyke at Seebaederkaje, where the Weser flows wide towards the North Sea, more than 40 kite flyers from all over Germany meet. They launch giant air sculptures, artistic stunt kites, and playful wind toys – a riot of colour against the maritime backdrop of the port city.
The most magical moment arrives on Saturday evening: During the night flying event, starting around 9 PM, the kites, partly illuminated and partly self-luminous, ascend into the dark sky above Bremerhaven. During the day, the kite workshop attracts children to build their own kites, complemented by a children's carousel, bouncy castles, and face painting stations – a thoroughly family-friendly programme.
The Kite Festival takes place concurrently with the Buergerbummel, a shopping Sunday with market stalls in the pedestrian zone. A free shuttle connects the city centre with the festival grounds on the dyke, allowing you to experience both events conveniently in one day. Stilt walkers and mobile play stations round off the programme.
Admission is free. The wide Weser Dyke offers plenty of space to watch the kites, have a picnic, and enjoy the fresh North Sea air – a classic family outing in Bremerhaven.
On June 6th and 7th, 2026, kites will once again fly high above the Weser Dyke at Seebaederkaje: Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM, with the grand night flying event starting around 9 PM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM. More than 40 kite flyers from all over Germany will present metre-high air sculptures, artistic stunt kites, and playful wind toys spread along the entire dyke. At Havenplatz on H.-H.-Meier-Straße, the Kite Building School invites children to build their own kite for free and without registration, with guidance. Additionally, there will be walk-acts, a pirate school, balloon modelling, face painting, and glitter tattoos. Willy-Brandt-Platz offers a bungee trampoline, mini pony rides, three bouncy castles, as well as a kite flying school and a small kite shop. Several food and drink stalls on Havenplatz will cater to your culinary needs. Concurrently, the Buergerbummel will take place in the city centre with 27 vendor stalls, and a free miniature train will connect both locations. Free admission.
Specific kite teams are not named in advance by the organiser Erlebnis Bremerhaven GmbH; the programme is created live on the dyke.
