Shopping, Strolling and Enjoying in Bremerhaven City Centre
The Bürgerbummel is one of the traditional city festivals (Stadtfest) of the port city of Bremerhaven. For one weekend in June, the city centre around the striking Große Kirche is transformed into a strolling mile where shopping, entertainment, and enjoyment come together. Around 25 exhibitors present a colourful assortment – from fresh asparagus and strawberries to pearl jewellery, toys, and wooden decorations – while music, stilt walkers, and a play bus liven up the pedestrian zone.
A hallmark of the Bürgerbummel is the 'Old Crafts' area: Here, craftspeople demonstrate traditional techniques such as rope making, broom binding, and basket weaving – a vibrant piece of cultural history that is particularly fitting in a port city like Bremerhaven. Unusual walking acts also attract attention, such as the mime Bastian, who floats across the promenade in his giant glass ball. Families get their money's worth with the children's programme, including hands-on activities, face painting, and rides.
The Bürgerbummel combines urban culture with retail: On Sunday, the shops in the city centre, the Mein Outlet & Shopping-Center, and the Columbus Shopping Center open for a Sunday shopping day. Thus, the city festival and shopping stroll merge seamlessly. The event is organised by Erlebnis Bremerhaven GmbH. On Saturday, the Dutch StoffenCircus, a large fabric market on Theodor-Heuss-Platz, complements the offerings – a magnet for anyone who loves sewing, tailoring, and fabrics.
The Bürgerbummel often coincides with other highlights, such as the Kite Festival on the Weserdeich, thus forming a grand city weekend in the state of Bremen together with the Havenwelten. Anyone who wants to experience Bremerhaven from its lively, urban side, beyond the Klimahaus and Auswandererhaus, is in the right place.
On June 6th and 7th, 2026, the Bürgerbummel invites you to Bremerhaven's city centre around the Große Kirche. 27 exhibitors will present a diverse range of goods from 11 AM to 6 PM on Saturday and from 12 PM to 5 PM on Sunday shopping day – from asparagus and strawberries to toys and household goods. Live music around the Große Kirche, stilt walkers, and a play bus will liven up the strolling mile, along with a children's programme featuring a carousel, bouncy castles, face painting stations, and a kite-making workshop. On Saturday, the Dutch StoffenCircus will be at Theodor-Heuss-Platz. A free miniature train will shuttle between the city centre and the simultaneous Kite Festival on the Weserdeich. On Sunday, the shops in the city centre, as well as the Mein Outlet & Shopping-Center and the Columbus Shopping Center, will be open for a shopping day.
The Bürgerbummel is a city and shopping festival without a fixed stage lineup; programme according to organiser Erlebnis Bremerhaven GmbH, subject to change.
Bremerhaven's city centre around the Große Kirche is easily accessible by bus and train, as well as by car; parking garages are nearby.
The Bürgerbummel is free to enter.
Saturday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM (Sunday shopping). StoffenCircus on Saturday 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM at Theodor-Heuss-Platz.
