About Herrnsheim Wine Festival

The Herrnsheim Wine Festival in the Castle Courtyard is one of the most beautiful wine festivals in Rheinhessen – if only because of its extraordinary venue: the castle courtyard of the classicist Schloss Herrnsheim with the most significant English landscape garden in Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2026, the festival opens on Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd. The organizer is the Herrnsheim Vintners' Interest Group, which presents the entire spectrum of Rhenish-Hessian wine culture with its own wines from the Herrnsheim vineyards. Thousands of visitors from Worms, Rheinhessen, and the metropolitan region flock to the castle courtyard year after year to experience wine, the castle, and the park in this unique combination. The Herrnsheim Kerb (a traditional folk festival) immediately follows from August 3rd to 5th.

Schloss Herrnsheim and its Landscape Garden

Schloss Herrnsheim is one of the most important classicist castles in Rhineland-Palatinate, built between 1808 and 1814 on behalf of the Barons von Heyl zu Herrnsheim. The associated English landscape garden – designed by Heinrich Siesmayer – is considered the most significant of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate, with old trees, lakes, bridges, and romantic vistas. The park and castle are now publicly accessible and form the backdrop for a series of high-quality cultural events.

The Herrnsheim Vintners' Interest Group

Herrnsheim is one of the most important wine-growing districts of Worms, with traditional wineries such as Müsel & Schäfer, Weingut Spohr (now located in the Pfeddersheim district but connected to Herrnsheim vineyards), Weingut Sandwiese, and others. The Herrnsheim Vintners' Interest Group pools these forces for the annual wine festival, where all vintners are represented with joint stands and their own wines from the classic Rhenish-Hessian vineyards around Herrnsheim are served.

Atmosphere in the Castle Courtyard

The castle courtyard offers a sheltered, intimate festival atmosphere. Festival benches are set up on the gravel, with the classicist castle facade in the background and the wine stands of the Herrnsheim vintners in the foreground. At sunset, the courtyard transforms into a special atmosphere of light, where wine and the castle enter into a harmonious union. Live music – mostly cover bands, acoustic acts, or jazz – provides the musical accompaniment.

Culinary Offerings

To accompany the wines of the Herrnsheim vintners, there are classic Rhenish-Hessian dishes: Spundekäs (a cheese spread), Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (grilled sausage), cheese platters, Flammkuchen (a type of flatbread), and sweet specialties. Herrnsheim restaurateurs and local clubs are involved in the catering stands.

Connection to the Festival Calendar

The wine festival seamlessly transitions into the Herrnsheim Kerb, which takes place immediately afterward from August 3rd to 5th. An extended festival weekend that makes the Herrnsheim district the center of Worms' festival calendar in August.
