Shepherd Traditions on the Albtrauf

The Albstädter Schäferfest is the premier festival for migratory shepherds on the southern Swabian Alb (Zollernalb district, Baden-Württemberg). It takes place at the Fuchsfarm parking area on the Raichberg near Albstadt-Onstmettingen—a 956-meter-high ridge on the Albtrauf offering one of the most famous viewpoints in Southern Germany. On clear days, the view extends from the Vosges mountains across the Black Forest to the Alps. The festival is organized by the Cultural Office of the City of Albstadt in collaboration with Albstadt Tourism.

Juniper Heaths — A Habitat Sustained by Sheep

The region around the Raichberg is one of Germany's most valuable juniper heath areas. This semi-open cultural landscape, characterized by sparse juniper growth, calcareous grasslands, and rare plants, exists exclusively due to sheep grazing. Without the migratory shepherds and their flocks, these heaths would be overgrown within a few decades. The Schäferfest is therefore more than just folklore—it is a living tribute to the craft that maintains this unique landscape.

Onstmettingen — A Mountaineering Village on the Alb

The district of Onstmettingen is part of Albstadt, the largest urban center in the Zollernalb district. Located at the foot of the Albtrauf, Onstmettingen is a popular starting point for hikes across the Swabian Alb. The Raichberg Tower—a 25-meter-high observation tower—is located in the immediate vicinity of the festival grounds and offers a famous 360-degree panorama.
