Atmospheric Christmas market in the mill barns on the Swabian Jura
Lonsee is a municipality with around 5,000 inhabitants in the Alb-Donau district (state of Baden-Württemberg), located in the source area of the Lone river on the eastern Swabian Jura – a region known for its caves with finds of Ice Age art (UNESCO World Heritage) and its quiet, vast Jura plateau. In the middle of this landscape, on the outskirts of Lonsee, stands the historic Untere Mühle: a two-story mill building with adjacent barns, which becomes the most atmospheric backdrop in the region once a year.
On the second Advent weekend, the municipality and volunteers transform the Untere Mühle, the barns, and the surrounding courtyard into a compact Christmas market with around 17 lovingly designed stalls. The assortment is predominantly craft-oriented: pottery, wood carving, knitwear, crafts, beeswax candles, Christmas decorations, and tree ornaments. The exhibitors are mainly private individuals and small manufacturers from the Lonetal and the eastern Swabian Jura.
Local clubs are responsible for catering: hot mulled wine, children's punch, and Lonsee quince mulled wine, along with Swabian Maultaschen (dumplings), gingerbread, roasted almonds, crêpes, and bratwurst. Jura specialties such as Albdinkel (spelt) pastries and liqueurs from regional distilleries can also be found at the stalls.
Sunday is family day: Santa Claus visits the market and distributes small gifts to the children. Brass ensembles and the local trombone choir provide Christmas sounds between the mill barns, while dusk over the Lonetal bathes the area in atmospheric light.
The Lonsee Christmas Market will take place for the 16th time in 2026. What began as a small mill festival has developed into a popular event in the Advent calendar of the eastern Swabian Jura – precisely because of its conscious avoidance of mass commercialism. Visitors come from Ulm, Geislingen, Heidenheim, and even from the Allgäu region to experience the intimate atmosphere of the mill barns.
The 16th edition of the Lonsee Christmas Market runs on the 2nd Advent weekend of 2026, from Saturday, December 6 (opening in the afternoon) to Sunday, December 7 (closing in the early evening). As every year, the venue is the Untere Mühle and the adjacent barns – a setting that Lonsee shares with no other Christmas market in the region.
Around 17 stalls offering crafts, catering by local clubs, and musical performances by Lonsee brass and choirs create the typical Advent atmosphere. The highlight for the little ones: a visit from Santa Claus on Sunday afternoon.
Detailed music program and exact times will be announced on lonsee.de in November 2026.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the club stalls at typical Advent prices (mulled wine approx. €3.50, Maultaschen plate approx. €6–8).
Lonsee can be reached via the A 7 (Ulm-West exit) and the B 10 (Stuttgart–Ulm). By train: Lonsee station on the Brenzbahn line (Ulm–Aalen), approx. 10 minutes walk to the Untere Mühle. Parking is available around the Mühlbachhalle and at the sports field; meadow parking may be subject to a fee during peak visitor times.
