The oldest Christmas market in the region – 54 years of tradition in the Hohhaus Garden
Lauterbach in the Vogelsberg is the district capital of the Vogelsberg district – a region known for its volcanic landscape, its forests, and its traditional old town. The Christmas market has been running here since 1972 – making it, with 54 years of history, the oldest Christmas market in the entire region. The charm of this market comes from the perfect blend of a tried-and-tested concept and loving attention to detail.
The 2026 market runs on two Advent weekends: from Friday, December 4th, to Sunday, December 6th (2nd Advent) and from Friday, December 11th, to Sunday, December 13th, 2026 (3rd Advent). This means the market is active for six days – concentrated on the middle Advent weekends, when the atmosphere in the Vogelsberg is at its most intense.
The venue is the Hohhaus Garden in Lauterbach's old town – a historic garden by the market square that offers the ideal, intimate setting for a classic Christmas market. Lovingly decorated wooden huts with fir branches and fairy lights line the garden. Unlike the large, noisy city center markets of major cities, the Lauterbach market feels almost idyllic.
The stalls offer everything associated with Advent: mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, crêpes, roasted almonds, along with homemade cookies, stollen, and regional specialties from the Vogelsberg. The organizers emphasize that the culinary variety covers both traditional and new flavors.
The stage program features a rotation of choirs, brass bands, and small orchestras. Especially for children: the living nativity scene with real sheep, the nostalgic carousel, and the Sandhasen-Express – a miniature train that travels through the illuminated old town of Lauterbach, offering families a tour of the city in the Advent lights. Santa Claus also makes regular visits.
