Town festival on the illuminated Lauter river in the Vogelsberg
Lauterbach is the district town of the Vogelsberg district in East Hesse – a town with just under 13,000 inhabitants on the B 254 federal road, nestled between the Vogelsberg and Rhön low mountain ranges. The river of the same name, the Lauter, flows through the old town and gives the town festival its name. A special atmosphere arises on the Lauter bridges and along the riverbank in September when the town celebrates the Lauterfest.
Lauterbach has a special feature: The Stadtfest (town festival) and Lauterfest are celebrated in alternating years – both events on the second weekend in September, both with a Sunday open for shopping. In 2026, it's the Lauterfest's turn. While the Stadtfest is more traditional, focusing on the market square, the Lauterfest is more focused on staging the river.
Two staging elements are characteristic: the illuminated Lauter, which is showcased at night with lights in the watercourse and under the bridges, and a piled-up sand beach in the middle of the city center – creating an unusual coastal summer vibe in the middle of this East Hessian low mountain town. Both elements make the Lauterfest visually one of the more unusual town festivals in the region.
The program combines culinary delights around the Lauter (food stands along the riverbank), live music on several stages in the city center, and a Sunday with open shops on September 13th. Sunday, with its morning pint and family program, is the quieter day; Saturday evening with live music and the illuminated Lauter is the atmospheric main evening.
Lauterbach is located at the transition between the Vogelsberg (Europe's largest extinct volcanic area) and the East Hessian low mountain landscape. Visitors to the Lauterfest can combine their trip with a hike in the Vogelsberg district or a visit to the Hoher Vogelsberg at Taufstein (773 m) — the region's diverse landscape is a compelling reason to visit.
The Lauterfest takes place on the second weekend in September. Organizer: City of Lauterbach (Hessen). Free admission.
Free admission. Consumption at the stands and in the city center shops.
By train: Lauterbach (Hessen) station (Vogelsbergbahn Fulda–Gießen). By car: A5 exit Alsfeld-Ost, then B254 to Lauterbach.
Free admission. Purchases and consumption at the stands and in the city center shops.
Plan to experience the illuminated Lauter on Saturday evening – the lighting on the water is the festival's true hallmark.
