Traditional May 1st market with around 120 vendors around the town hall
Lonsee is located in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg, about 15 kilometers northwest of Ulm on the eastern Swabian Jura. With just under 5,000 inhabitants, Lonsee is a typical Swabian Jura municipality — meadows, forests, scattered fruit trees, and a town center that has attracted the entire region for decades for the traditional May Market on May 1st.
The market extends along Hauptstraße and around the Lonsee town hall. Around 120 registered market vendors offer a wide range of products: clothing, shoes, tools, household goods, toys, plants, jewelry, leather goods — the classic Swabian flea market with everything you used to need twice a year. In addition, there is arts and crafts, beekeepers with honey, and cheese, sausage, and bread stands from the region.
The May Market starts early: the first stalls open at 8:00 AM, and the traditional Weißwurst breakfast is a must for many regular visitors — Weißwurst, sweet mustard, pretzel, and a beer for May 1st. Smoked fish stands from Oberschwaben and Allgäu showcase their specialties, and a wood-fired baker bakes fresh bread on-site. Local clubs run beverage stands in the festival tent — the proceeds go to the club treasuries.
Lonsee is one of the few Jura villages with direct train access: The Schwäbische Alb-Bahn (Line 5 from Ulm) stops directly in the town center. This makes Lonsee a convenient day trip destination on May 1st — even without a car, perfect for a relaxed May Market tour with family or friends.
The May Market is part of a long Lonsee market tradition: its roots go back to the 19th century when the market was a meeting place for farmers, traders, and craftsmen from the surrounding area. Today, it is a family festival that brings together Lonsee's clubs, the municipality, and the region — and guarantees a relaxed May 1st.
The May Market on the public holiday May 1st, 2026, continues the Lonsee market tradition: Around 120 market vendors will be spread along Hauptstraße and in the town center. The train connection makes the market an easy day trip, and the Weißwurst breakfast in the morning is a fixed appointment for regular visitors.
The range of goods extends from classic flea market items (clothing, tools, household goods) to arts and crafts and regional food products (honey, cheese, sausage, bread), as well as snack stands with smoked fish, bratwurst, and wood-fired bread. In the festival tent, local clubs provide drinks and musical entertainment.
Free admission. Weißwurst breakfast (2 Weißwürste, pretzel, mustard, beer) approx. €9. Bratwurst €4, smoked fish €8–€12, wood-fired bread €5–€8. Flea market goods at usual prices.
Lonsee is located on the L 1230 between Ulm and Heidenheim. Take the Schwäbische Alb-Bahn (Line 5) from Ulm Hbf directly to Lonsee station in 20 minutes, then a 2-minute walk to the town center. By car, take the A 8 (exit Merklingen, then L 1230) or the B 19.
Free admission. You only pay at the market and catering stands. Parking is available in designated areas on the outskirts of town (parking guidance system active), free of charge.
May 1st, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops are open on this public holiday — no special permit is needed due to the May Market tradition.
