Trail Running in the North Harz

The North Harz, with its wooded slopes, wide valleys, and impressive elevation differences, offers ideal conditions for trail and mountain running events. The Bad Harzburg Mountain Marathon utilizes this scenic quality and leads its routes through the most beautiful sections of the region. Elevation differences of up to 618 meters make the run a real mountain challenge, combining hiking, running, and a mountain experience.

19th Edition of an Established Event

With its 19th edition in 2026, the Mountain Marathon looks back on almost two decades of tradition. What began as a regional event has developed into a nationally known trail run, attracting hundreds of participants annually from all over northern Germany and beyond.

Four Distances for All Performance Levels

The range of distances is deliberately broad to appeal to participants of all performance levels:

• 6 km — Beginner distance, suitable for newcomers to mountain running and for active individuals
• 12 km — Medium distance with a challenging elevation profile
• 21 km (Half Marathon) — Classic distance for ambitious runners
• 42 km (Marathon) — The ultimate distance for trail experts

Additionally, Nordic Walking is offered — an alternative for those who want to enjoy the mountain experience without a running competition.

Whit Saturday as a Traditional Date

Whit Saturday is the traditional date for the Mountain Marathon. In 2026, this falls on May 23. The timing on the Whit weekend combines the sporting challenge with the festive Whit atmosphere of the Harz Mountains and allows participants to spend the weekend with family and friends in the region.

Start at An der Rennbahn 1

The start and finish are located at An der Rennbahn 1 in Bad Harzburg — on the grounds of the famous racecourse. This central location offers professional infrastructure with parking, changing rooms, catering, and spectator areas. After the race, the typical marathon atmosphere awaits with a medal, refreshments, and a joint celebration.
