Largest event in the Altenburger Land region with a parade and farmers' market — 34th edition in September 2026
Rositz is a small municipality in the Altenburger Land district, in the far east of Thuringia, on the border with Saxony. The region — historically part of Saxon Osterland — carefully preserves its customs: Altenburg peasant attire, harvest crown, dialect ('Altenburgisch'), traditional dances. The Rositzer Kirmes has been an important venue for this tradition since 1991 — established after reunification as a revival of the older Kirmes tradition from GDR times.
The 34th edition in 2026 runs from September 17th to 20th on the third weekend of September. The highlight is the grand parade on Saturday — club delegations, floats, peasant costumes, pipe bands, and fanfare bands march through Rositz. The harvest crown and the Altenburg peasant costumes are central symbols — they connect the Kirmes activities with rural tradition.
There is a continuous program in the festival tent. Brass bands and pipe bands alternate, with choir concerts (regional choirs and men's singing societies) forming highlights on Saturday and Sunday. On the Kirmesfestwiese, there is the farmers' market with traditional crafts: blacksmith, woodturner, basket weaver, loom. Food is traditional — Altenburg peasant fare ( Sauerbraten, dumplings, sauerkraut), Bratwurst, Rostbrätel, cakes, homemade baked goods.
Carousels, shooting galleries, snack stands — the classic Kirmes infrastructure. There is a dedicated children's area with a carousel, bouncy castle, and small rides. Sunday is Family Day with a morning pint and a family concert.
From September 17th to 20th, 2026, the 34th Rositzer Kirmes will take place. The highlight is the grand parade on Saturday with club delegations, floats, peasant costumes, and pipe bands marching through Rositz. In addition, there is a farmers' market with traditional crafts, a festival tent with a stage program, and family activities for children.
Festival grounds freely accessible. Festival tent concerts may have a small contribution to cover costs (typically €3–€8). Rides and food available on site.
