Village Anniversary from September 4th to 6th, 2026 in Saaletal
Gumperda is a small municipality in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis district in Thuringia, located in the Saaletal valley between Jena and Kahla. The first documented mention of the place dates back to the year 876 — 1150 years of village history, which will be celebrated in 2026 with a grand anniversary festival. Like many villages in the Saaletal, Gumperda lived from agriculture for centuries; later, with industrialization, commuters moved to the nearby cities of Jena (approx. 12 km north) and Kahla (approx. 5 km west). Its location on the Saale cycle path and near the Leuchtenburg castle also makes it attractive to tourists.
As early as spring 2026, working groups around the village association, the municipal administration, and the Gumperda volunteer fire department were formed. Initial meetings in the Alte Schule Gumperda were organized. A draft program was created by the end of January 2026. The final program structure will follow in the spring. Based on experience, such village anniversaries in Thuringia typically include a festive parade, historical tableaux depicting local history, a celebratory concert, dance evenings, special exhibitions, and a family program.
The anniversary spans three days on the first weekend of September 2026. Friday evening is traditionally reserved for the opening ceremony, Saturday for the highlight with the festive parade and evening event, and Sunday for family day with a morning pint, church service, and culinary offerings. Gumperda's club scene — sports club, fire department, heritage society — jointly designs the program. Guests are expected from the entire Saale-Holzland-Kreis and beyond.
In the Saale-Holzland-Kreis district, Gumperda is located in the heart of a region known for its gentle Saaletal hiking trails, wine and fruit cultivation, and small villages with vibrant club life. The nearby Leuchtenburg castle near Seitenroda and the town of Kahla with its porcelain tradition are just a few kilometers away. Visitors to the anniversary often combine it with a trip through the Saaletal — a particularly scenic corner of Thuringia.
The anniversary year 2026 is a unique opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful small villages in the Saaletal. Working groups involving the village association, municipal administration, and volunteer fire department began their work in early 2026 and created a draft program. The detailed program will be announced in spring on gumperda.de and through the municipality.
