Burgplatz as a Magical Backdrop

The Burgplatz Schöningen in front of the historic Schöningen Castle provides an extraordinary backdrop for a Christmas market. The old castle walls, the castle gate, and the surrounding historic buildings create an advent atmosphere that few places in the region can offer.

28 Years of Tradition

With its 28th edition in 2026, the Schöningen Christmas Market looks back on almost three decades of tradition. The Schöninger Werbegemeinschaft has developed the market into a fixed date in Lower Saxony's advent calendar.

Four Days of Advent Magic

The four-day format (Thu/Fri 4 PM–9 PM, Sat 11 AM–9 PM, Sun 11 AM–6 PM) concentrates the advent experience into a long weekend. Unlike the multi-week large markets of the metropolises, Schöningen focuses on intensity and an intimate atmosphere.

Wooden Huts with Arts and Crafts and Culinary Delights

At the market stalls, regional artisans and direct marketers offer Christmas decorations, woodwork, ceramics, natural cosmetics, honey, liqueurs, jams, mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, crêpes, roasted almonds, and sweet temptations.

Opening by the Mayor

The official opening is performed by the mayor of the town of Schöningen. With a short address, the switching on of the lights, and a first joint toast, the market is ceremonially opened.

Children's Program

Families will find a dedicated children's program at the market: carousel, hands-on activities, craft sessions, face painting, and possibly a visit from St. Nicholas. The family-friendly weekend opening hours from 11 AM make the market a Sunday family outing destination.

Live Music on the Market Stage

On weekends and selected evenings, regional choirs, brass bands, ensembles, and solo artists perform on the market stage. Advent songs, classics, and modern interpretations shape the musical program.

Schöninger Werbegemeinschaft as Organizer

The organizer is the Schöninger Werbegemeinschaft e.V., the association of Schöningen retailers and restaurateurs. The market is an expression of their commitment to a vibrant city center.
