Traditional Pentecost Monday mountain festival on the Kohlberg in the Fichtelgebirge
The Zuckerhutfest is one of the most popular traditional festivals in the Fichtelgebirge. It takes place every year on Pentecost Monday on the Kohlberg, the prominent local mountain of Arzberg in the Wunsiedel district of the Fichtelgebirge, Bavaria. Since the 1960s, the Fichtelgebirge Association (FGV) Arzberg has organized the festival, which attracts thousands of visitors.
The name refers to the sugarloaf-shaped silhouette of the Kohlberg. Hikers come to the summit on foot from all directions – many start their tour from Arzberg, Marktredwitz, or surrounding towns. The joint ascent and reaching the festival grounds at the Waldenfelswarte are an integral part of the experience.
The highlight for many visitors is climbing the wooden observation tower Waldenfelswarte on the Kohlberg summit. From the top, a wide panorama of the Fichtelgebirge unfolds. Throughout the day, as visitors describe it, "thousands of small and large feet" ascend and descend the tower steps.
The Fichtelgebirge Association Arzberg provides guests with food and drinks, enjoyed under the trees. Bohemian brass music by regional bands like "Böhmisch Blech" creates the atmosphere. The combination of mountain panorama, brass music, festive crowds, and the distinctive tower contributes to the festival's unique charm.
The Zuckerhutfest 2026 will be celebrated on Pentecost Monday, May 25, 2026, starting at 10 AM on the Kohlberg near Arzberg. The organizer, as for decades, is the Fichtelgebirge Association Arzberg.
