Franconian Kirchweih in Wine Country
In Franconia, the Kirchweih is one of the most important village festivals of the year. In Ipsheim, a market town in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, the spring Kirchweih is celebrated over several days in May. Ipsheim is located in Franconian wine country on the edge of the Steigerwald and is known for its viticulture — the Kerwa therefore combines classic Kirchweih customs with the region's wine-related conviviality.
Festival Tent and Customs
The centerpiece of the Kerwa is the festival tent with brass band music, festival activities, and Franconian cuisine. Traditional Franconian Kirchweih customs include the erection of the Kerwabaum (Kerwa tree), the Kerwa procession, and the activities of the Kerwaburschen and -madli (Kerwa boys and girls). Over several days, the festival church service, morning pint (Frühschoppen), brass band evenings, and social gatherings alternate.
Wine and Franconian Specialties
As a wine community, Ipsheim contributes its local Franconian wine to the Kirchweih festival. In addition to beer and festival tent operations, wine service and Franconian delicacies are an integral part of the Kerwa. The combination of Kirchweih customs and wine culture makes the Ipsheim Kerwa a special festival in the Rangau.
Ipsheim and the Rangau
Ipsheim is located in the Rangau region between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe, in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim. The market town is surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. A visit to the Kerwa can be well combined with a hike through the vineyards, a detour to the nearby Hoheneck Castle, or an excursion to Bad Windsheim.
