Romantic Wine Festival in the Castle Courtyard under Old Trees
Ipsheim, located in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district, is a heart of the Franconian wine paradise. With just under 2,100 inhabitants and three districts — Ipsheim, Mailheim, and above all Ippesheim — the market town is one of the most traditional wine-growing communities in Middle Franconia. Its architectural landmark is Schloss Lichtenstein, a historic Renaissance and Baroque ensemble on a hill above the Aisch valley.
The Weinfest rund ums Ippesheimer Schloss is what large events like the Würzburger Weindorf or the Sommerlocher Weinfest are deliberately not: small, personal, romantic. In the Schlosshof (castle courtyard), there are stalls from local wine-growing families, tables and benches under old trees, and during breaks, guests stroll through the castle park. This is insider tip format — the organizers themselves describe their festival as "an insider tip for wine connoisseurs.".
Mainly wines from the Heimat- und Weinbauverein Mkt. Ippesheim e.V. are served — Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina, and other varieties that thrive in the Aischgrund on Keuper and gypsum soils. The Weinprinzessin (wine princess) welcomes guests, vintners provide information about their wines, and Franconian snacks (Schäuferla, Bratwürste, cheese) complete the culinary offerings.
For centuries, Schloss Lichtenstein was the seat of the Imperial Knights of Lichtenstein. Today it is privately owned but accessible on special occasions like the wine festival. The Schlosspark (castle park) with its old trees forms the natural setting, and the protected microclimate for wine ensures excellent grapes. In mid-July, the festival is an opportunity to combine both: a historic site and a young vintage.
The 2026 wine festival around Ippesheimer Schloss will take place as usual on the weekend around July 18th. It begins on Saturday afternoon with the opening by the Heimat- und Weinbauverein Mkt. Ippesheim and the Weinprinzessin. Wine stalls from local wine-growing families will be set up in the castle courtyard, with tables and benches under old trees, snack stands, and a small live music program to round off the offerings.
On Sunday, the festival continues with a morning pint, castle tours (on request), and a relaxed conclusion. The format deliberately remains small: insider tip character instead of mass crowds, personal encounters instead of waiting times at overcrowded bars.
Detailed program and exact times will be announced by the Heimat- und Weinbauverein in advance at weinbauverein-ippesheim.de and in the Ippesheim event calendar. Contact for reservations: Karl-Heinz Wellmann, Tel. 09339-1014.
Ipsheim/Ippesheim is located about 50 km west of Nuremberg, on the B470 between Bad Windsheim and Bad Königshofen. Ipsheim train station on the Nuremberg–Würzburg line; about a 20-minute walk from the station to the castle through the vineyard. By car, parking is available on the Schlossberg and in the town center.
Free admission to the Schlosshof. Wines, food, and drinks are sold directly at the stall at festival prices. Group reservations via Karl-Heinz Wellmann, Tel. 09339-1014.
Sturdy footwear is recommended (castle courtyard has a natural floor). Bring a blanket or light sweater for the evening — the castle hill can get cool after sunset. Combining the visit with a castle tour or a vineyard hike through the Lichtensteiner vineyards is recommended.
