Sled Dog Race Todtmoos — Black Forest Tradition since 1975

The International Sled Dog Race Todtmoos is one of Europe's oldest dog sled races. Since 1975 — the 51st edition was planned for 2026 — the race has been held in the Southern Black Forest. The venue is the Waldhaus-Husky-Camp in the Schwarzenbach district of Todtmoos. The organizers are the Sled Dog Sports Association Baden-Württemberg e.V. together with the Municipality of Todtmoos. The event traditionally attracts hundreds of mushers with their husky teams from all over Europe and day visitors from the Black Forest, High Rhine, and Swiss regions.

What to Experience (Planned Program 2026)

Two days of dog sled racing on groomed trails through the snowy High Black Forest. Distances from 5 to 21 kilometers, classes for different sled sizes and sled types (sprint, middle distance). Start around 9 AM each day; award ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Outside of race times, there is a supporting program: petting husky area, mulled wine stands, bratwurst, hot drinks, souvenir stands, meet the mushers.

Note: 2026 Edition Cancelled Due to Lack of Snow

IMPORTANT: The edition originally planned for January 24–25, 2026, has been officially cancelled due to unfavorable snow conditions and uncertain weather forecasts. The organizers have made a difficult but necessary decision — the safety of the dogs and fair competition conditions take precedence. As an alternative, the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail has been introduced as a cart race on the last weekend of October. The original sled dog race remains on the event calendar and will return as soon as snow conditions permit — expected in 2027.

Todtmoos — Black Forest Spa Town

Todtmoos is located in the Waldshut district in the Southern Black Forest, at an altitude of around 800 meters, and is a health resort with a beneficial climate. The municipality, with about 1,800 inhabitants, relies on tourism, agriculture, and forestry. The district of Schwarzenbach is located slightly above Todtmoos and is a winter sports area (cross-country trails, huts). The Waldhaus-Husky-Camp is a training and event location for sled dog sports and the starting point for numerous cross-country trails.

Getting There (Planned Concept)

Shuttle buses were planned from Freiburg, Waldshut-Tiengen, and Bad Säckingen — these were intended to alleviate the lack of parking directly at the venue. The admission price was set at €12 (adults) or €6 with a guest card, children aged 12–16 €6 (€3 with card). Shuttle use was included in the ticket.

Sled Dog Race Todtmoos — edition 2026

The 51st edition of the International Sled Dog Race Todtmoos (4th Waldhaus Cup), originally planned for January 24th and 25th, 2026, has been officially cancelled by the organizers due to lack of snow. The safety of the dogs and fair competition conditions do not allow for the event to take place. As an alternative, the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail (cart race) has been introduced on the last weekend of October. The sled dog race remains on the event calendar and will return as soon as snow conditions permit — expected in 2027.

Cancelled — Lack of Snow in the Southern Black Forest

The 51st edition planned for January 24/25, 2026, could not take place. Several weeks without stable snow cover in the High Black Forest led to the decision to cancel the race. Organizers and the municipality communicated in a timely manner to allow mushers and guests to plan accordingly.

As an alternative, the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail has been held as a cart race on the last weekend of October for several years — a format that helps the sled dog sports association through snow-poor winters. The original sled dog race remains firmly on the event calendar. For the return in 2027, all stakeholders are hoping for a stable winter.
