33rd edition — one of the most renowned German street theatre festivals with the motto 'The Spirit in the Machine'
Since 1993, Welttheater der Straße has transformed Schwerte's city centre into a stage for international street theatre, contemporary circus, and experimental performance for three days at the end of August. With 33 editions, the festival is among the most renowned German street theatre festivals and holds a firm position in the international festival scene. The organizer is Welttheater der Straße e.V. in cooperation with the City of Schwerte.
The 33rd festival works with a programmatic motto: 'The Spirit in the Machine'. The companies will address the human-technology relationship in their pieces — from AI and robot reflections to mechanical performance machines, from digital identity to the physical reaction to the acceleration of digital life. The detailed programme with the list of companies, performance times, and venues will be released in June 2026.
In 2026, the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) is supporting the festival with €10,000 — an acknowledgement of its importance to the Ruhr region's cultural landscape. For years, Welttheater has been one of the most important street theatre festivals in the Ruhr area and a hallmark of Schwerte. Each edition features a mix of established international companies (French street theatre, Belgian dance theatre, Spanish acrobatics) and experimental emerging artists.
Schwerte is located in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia, at the transition between the Ruhr area and Sauerland. This medium-sized town with its historic city centre and traces of industrial culture (Rohrmeisterei) has been the venue for the festival for decades — and with Welttheater, Schwerte has developed a cultural profile that makes the town known far beyond its size.
The 33rd edition of Welttheater der Straße will take place from August 28 to 30, 2026. The motto 'The Spirit in the Machine' addresses the human-technology relationship — companies will respond to this leitmotif with their pieces. The venues are the Marktplatz (main stage), Ruhrstraße (secondary performance area), and Rohrmeisterei (indoor venue). Opening on Friday, extended programme on Saturday and Sunday. Detailed programme in June 2026.
