Traditional May Fair around Schwerte Town Hall with opening fireworks
When May begins, the folk festival season starts in Schwerte with the traditional Maikirmes. From May 1st to 4th, 2026, the Rathausstraße in the heart of the town in the Ruhrtal will transform into a fairground mile. Four days of festivities over the extended May Day weekend with a family atmosphere and top rides.
The 2026 program features a strong selection of classic and modern fairground highlights:
The festivities kick off on May 1st, 2026, with opening fireworks. A tradition that draws Schwerte families from all over the Ruhrtal — the first day of May with fiery highlights in the sky and the beginning of the fairground bustle on Rathausstraße.
On Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, Schwerte's shops will open their doors — open Sundays from 1 PM to 6 PM. The combination of the Maikirmes and open shops attracts thousands of visitors to Schwerte's city center.
The festival concludes with Family Day on Monday, May 4th, 2026. Showmen offer reduced prices for children, walking acts roam the fairground — stilt walkers, clowns, fairy tale characters, and costumed entertainers delight the little ones. A conscious conclusion with a family focus.
During the Maikirmes, Rathausstraße and Bahnhofstraße will be closed until approximately May 5th. Residents and visitors should use surrounding parking facilities. The central location directly at the town hall makes public transport the recommended way to travel.
The town of Schwerte is located at the southern end of the Ruhrtal, in the Kreis Unna (North Rhine-Westphalia), right on the border with the Sauerland. With around 47,000 inhabitants, it is a defining medium-sized town in the region — known for its intact medieval old town with half-timbered houses and the Ruhrtal panorama. The Maikirmes, alongside Schwertkamen-Volksfest and the Christmas market, is one of the three major city events of the year.
The 2026 Maikirmes starts on May Day with opening fireworks on Rathausstraße. The top rides Break Dancer (Hartmann), Musik Express (Reminder), Pole Position (Mennecke), Super Dance (Braun), and Venturer Simulator (Stockmann) make Schwerte's fair an attractive start to the summer season. Sunday features shops open, Monday is Family Day with walking acts and reduced prices.
Free admission. Rides at showman prices, reduced on Family Day.
Schwerte train station (S5 from Dortmund and Hagen), then a 5-minute walk to Rathausstraße. By car: A1 exit Schwerte or A45 exit Dortmund-Süd. Parking garages at the train station and city center.
Fair admission is free. Rides and food are priced daily. Reduced prices on Family Day (Monday). Sunday opening hours with special offers from Schwerte shops.
Friday evening (May 1st) for the fireworks is the atmospheric start. Sunday afternoon during peak hours with the Sunday opening. Families with children are best off on Family Day (Monday, May 4th) — walking acts and reduced prices.
