Nordstrand in the Nordfriesland District
Nordstrand is a peninsula in the North Frisian Wadden Sea in the Nordfriesland district (Schleswig-Holstein). The island—connected to the mainland by the Beltringharder Damm, built in 1934—has around 2,200 inhabitants and is part of a cultural area that preserved its own Frisian customs well into the 20th century. The Frisian custom of Biikebrennen has been recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage since 2014.
Biikebrennen — Frisian Winter Tradition
Every February 21st, the Biike bonfire blazes in North Frisia—on the islands of Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, and on the mainland. The custom originally served to bid farewell to whalers; later, it became a ritual to drive out winter: a straw figure, the "Piader," is symbolically burned, officially marking the end of winter. In Nordstrand, the Biikebrennen takes place at Süderhafen—one of the most atmospheric venues in the region, with the Wadden Sea as a backdrop.

Custom, Identity, and UNESCO Heritage
The Biikebrennen is not a nostalgic spectacle but a living tradition. The Nordstrander Heimatverein organizes the fire anew each year, collects the firewood, builds the straw figure, and arranges the musical entertainment. Visitors to the Biikebrennen experience an authentic piece of Frisian cultural heritage—standing right at Süderhafen, overlooking the nocturnal Wadden Sea.
