4th International Sled Dog Cart Race in the Southern Black Forest with up to 60 teams and over 400 dogs
The Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail in Todtmoos is a special form of classic sled dog sport: Since the southern Black Forest has no snow in autumn, the teams compete not with sleds, but with cart teams, bikes, scooters, or by running (Canicross). This 4th edition on October 24 and 25, 2026, is the snow-free alternative to the legendary Todtmoos Sled Dog Race, which has been canceled multiple times due to lack of snow — and has developed into an independent highlight of German sled dog sport.
Over the weekend, teams will battle for best times on the approximately 2.9 km long course in several disciplines:
You will experience top-class dog sport — most teams travel from all over Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. With up to 60 teams and over 400 dogs, Todtmoos is one of the largest events of its kind in Southern Germany.
Unlike many sporting events, you get very close to the athletes — the dogs — at the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail. In the pre-start area, you can watch the teams harness up, experience the dogs' excitement, and chat with the mushers. A small village of huts with regional specialties — Black Forest sausages, farmer's bread, mulled wine, pumpkin soup — and stalls selling dog accessories and sled dog equipment will be set up in the Old Spa Park. Families will find an authentic festival atmosphere combined with genuine top-level sport.
The health resort of Todtmoos, with its beneficial climate, is located at an altitude of 805 meters in the southern Schwarzwald-Baar district, nestled amidst deep fir forests and gentle high valleys. The community was already a well-known pilgrimage and recreational destination in the 19th century and has been home to the Todtmoos Sled Dog Race for decades — one of the oldest and best-known in Europe. With the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail, the town is writing a new tradition: sled dog sport here is not just dependent on snow.
While the dogs are racing, you can explore the forests around Todtmoos during your hiking breaks — the Hochkopf hiking trail leads directly past the racecourse. The combination of sporting spectacle, dog fascination, and Black Forest atmosphere makes the Waldhaus-Wehra-Trail the perfect family outing on an October weekend. Free admission — you only pay for food and possibly parking.
The fourth edition in 2026 builds on the successes of previous years. Up to 60 teams from all over Central Europe will start over two days in several disciplines on the 2.9 km trail through the forests around Todtmoos. The village of huts in the Old Spa Park remains the convivial center — Black Forest specialties, mulled wine, stalls for sled dog sport equipment.
The Sled Dog Sport Association of Baden-Württemberg is organizing the event in cooperation with the municipality of Todtmoos and the Southern Black Forest Holiday World.
