8th edition of the Wuppertal Literary Biennale on the theme "Rage", 7–16 May 2026
The Wuppertal Literary Biennale (WLB) is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most prestigious literary festivals. Organized by the Wuppertal City Cultural Office since 2012, it presents readings, discussions, and literary performances for ten days every second May. The 8th edition in 2026 is under the highly topical theme "Rage".
The festival motto addresses a social phenomenon: "It flares up in comment sections, simmers in kitchen table conversations, drives people onto the streets." The Biennale examines how rage arises from injustice — and how it can simultaneously inspire resistance and new perspectives. Discussion forums, readings, and performances explore the theme in its full breadth.
Three innovative programme points expand the established format: a first-ever Family Day with its own programme for young readers, writing workshops as safe spaces to engage with one's own rage, and the new festival centre WTF (Wut trifft Freiraum – Rage meets Free Space) in the n46 gallery.
The WLB remains true to itself in 2026: moderated author readings, the discourse forum curated by Elisa Aseva, the WLB Prize for emerging female authors, and the closing with regional voices. The opening on 7 May features Lütfiye Güzel reading with the ensemble of the Wuppertal Schauspiel; the award ceremony on 13 May honours the winner Nina Kiedrowicz.
The Biennale is spread across central Wuppertal cultural venues: St. Laurentius, Zentralbibliothek, Kunsthalle Barmen, Utopiastadt, the alternative LOCH, the new Pina Bausch Zentrum, and the WTF Gallery n46. This mix of established cultural institutions and alternative spaces shapes the unmistakable character of the WLB.
Wuppertal is a literary city with a great history — from Else Lasker-Schüler to Friedrich Engels. The Literary Biennale builds on this tradition, connecting the literary culture of the Bergisches Land region with contemporary voices from German-speaking countries.
The 2026 edition of the WLB focuses on the interplay of rage, language, and literary expression. Readings, discussion forums, writing workshops, and performances explore the theme over ten days at various cultural venues in Wuppertal.
With the first-ever Family Day, new writing workshops, and the new WTF (Wut trifft Freiraum – Rage meets Free Space) festival centre in the n46 gallery, the Biennale expands its reach with participatory formats for young readers and anyone wishing to approach their own rage through literature.
