Free summer movement program in Wuppertal's parks
When the school holidays begin in July, Wuppertal's parks transform into open spaces for movement. 'Sport im Park' is a free outdoor sports program by the City of Wuppertal, running for almost two months from July 13 to September 6, 2026. You don't need to register, sign up for a membership, or meet any specific sportswear requirements – just show up, join in, and leave.
The program is spread across seven locations throughout Wuppertal:
Each location has its own schedule — typically two to four sports sessions per day.
The instructors are qualified trainers from local sports clubs and fitness studios. The offerings range from gentle yoga and Pilates to abs-thighs-buttocks, functional training, HIIT, and Tabata, as well as movement games for children and family workouts. Unusual formats like walking tours, outdoor dance, and park boxing are also included.
Simply come to the park at the announced time. Instructors are easily identifiable (often wearing green 'Sport im Park' vests). You only need sports attire and a mat (for yoga and Pilates). Participation is completely free — the program is funded by the city's sports budget and sponsorships.
With a population of over 358,000, Wuppertal is the largest city in the Bergisches Land region — and internationally known for its Schwebebahn (suspension railway), which has been gliding through the Wupper valley as a means of transport since 1901. Despite its high density of buildings, the city has an unusually large proportion of green spaces — making 'Sport im Park' possible. 'Sport im Park' is part of a growing trend of free outdoor movement offerings in North Rhine-Westphalia (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bochum) over the last decade.
The complete program with times and sports for each park will be published in June 2026 on the City of Wuppertal's microsite. Tip: check if the session is taking place before you go — outdoor classes are occasionally canceled due to heavy rain. All locations are easily accessible by the Schwebebahn and bus. A good starting point for beginners: the yoga sessions in the Hardt park or the Botanical Garden.
The program is spread across seven locations with different focuses. Sports and times vary by park — from early morning (Hardt, Yoga) to evening (Lienhardplatz, Functional Training).
