Open-Air Concerts at the Racecourse
When the Hamburg summer moves into August, the Bahrenfeld racecourse in western Hamburg transforms into one of the city's largest open-air stages. The Hamburger Kultursommer is a ten-day concert series that brings top national and international acts to the racecourse – in a so-called "festival feeling" format, but without a classic multi-day festival concept.
A Concert Series Instead of a Classic Festival
Unlike Wacken or Hurricane, the Kultursommer offers individual concert evenings: one headliner with a supporting act per day. Those who want to see everyone buy multiple tickets – those who only want to experience their favorite band live buy one ticket. The format is thus suitable for a broader audience: families for afternoon acts, hardcore fans for late concerts.
Lineup 2026
Seven headliners are scheduled for 2026:
- AnnenMayKantereit – August 20th and 21st (two concerts due to sold-out previous years)
- Nina Chuba – August 22nd
- BUNT. – August 23rd
- Zaz – August 26th (French pop diva)
- Die Toten Hosen – August 27th (Düsseldorf punk legends)
- Montez – August 28th
- Kraftklub – August 29th (Chemnitz indie rock)
Bahrenfeld Racecourse as an Open-Air Venue
The Bahrenfeld racecourse has been used as a horse racing track for decades but has developed into Hamburg's second main stage for major open-air concerts in recent years. The spacious grounds, the natural grandstands, and the good transport links make the site ideal for festivals of this magnitude.
Bahrenfeld in the Altona District
The district of Bahrenfeld is located in the Hamburg district of Altona, in the west of the city. With over 30,000 inhabitants, it is one of Hamburg's growing districts – the area between DESY (the large research center), the residential areas, and the racecourse is constantly changing. The Kultursommer at the racecourse is part of this transformation, from a horse racing venue to a cultural pop-up hub.
