3rd edition of the indie and pop festival in the Strünkede castle courtyard – Headliner Rikas, single-stage concept in the Strünkeder Sommer
The Sounds Like Sugar Festival is one of the young indie and pop festivals in the Ruhr area. It consciously positions itself as an antipode to large open-air festivals: no main stage and side stage layout, but a single stage, curated with a clear dramaturgical line. The concept of the Strünkeder Sommer festival: a more intense concert experience instead of parallel offerings, a denser audience, fair ticket prices.
Sounds Like Sugar 2026 takes place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, in the Strünkede castle courtyard in Herne. Doors open at 3:30 PM, start at 4:00 PM. Due to logistical optimization, there will only be the main stage in the castle courtyard in 2026 – the focus on one stage is explicitly intended.
For the first time in 2026, a second event complements the main festival: the Sounds Like Sugar Kulturschiff on Friday, October 16, 2026, on the Rhine-Herne Canal. A concert on the water, curated according to the same principles as the main event: emerging artists, fair ticket prices, atmospheric staging. Tickets via Reservix.
Schloss Strünkede is a moated castle in the Herne district of Baukau, with a closed courtyard and baroque grounds. The castle today houses the Emschertal Museum. The castle courtyard is a closed architectural complex – the stage appears theatrically concentrated within it, the acoustics are surprisingly good, and the historical shell gives the festival a special character.
The festival is presented by the Cultural Office of the City of Herne. The program manager is Maurice Margraf. The municipal sponsorship is reflected in fair ticket prices (€14 regular, €12 in advance) and a high curatorial standard. Sounds Like Sugar is part of the municipal cultural season "Strünkeder Sommer".
Herne, with around 155,000 inhabitants, is an independent city in the heart of the Ruhr area, located between Bochum, Recklinghausen, and Gelsenkirchen. Industrially shaped by mining, culturally driven by transformation projects. Sounds Like Sugar is part of this cultural reorientation: a young festival that focuses on castle architecture and water features, rather than industrial lost places.
The 3rd edition of the Sounds Like Sugar Festival 2026 will take place in the Strünkede castle courtyard, with exclusively one main stage. The organizer is the Cultural Office of the City of Herne, program manager Maurice Margraf.
Main festival: €14 regular, €12 in advance via Reservix. Sounds Like Sugar Kulturschiff on Oct 16, 2026, separate ticket sales.
Public transport: U-Bahn U35 to Herne, then bus 311 or 320 to Baukau, short walk to the castle. By car via the A42 (Herne-Baukau exit).
Parking spaces around Schloss Strünkede and at Westfalenpark.
Main festival: €14 regular, €12 in advance via Reservix. Sounds Like Sugar Kulturschiff (October 16, 2026) separate advance booking via Reservix.
Main stage in the castle courtyard, some food trucks and bars, restrooms. No extensive festival infrastructure – the concept is a concentrated concert format rather than a festival campus.
Arrive on time for admission (3:30 PM) to secure a good spot in front of the stage. The acoustics in the castle courtyard are best in the front third. Those who want to experience the festival twice should also come to the Kulturschiff on the Rhine-Herne Canal in October – that's the more unusual option.
