Seasonal 'Besenwirtschaft' at the BERGHOF with young wine and conviviality
The Besenwirtschaft is a centuries-old German tradition from wine-growing regions: winemakers are allowed to serve their own wine directly on their own premises for a limited time — as a sign, they hang a broom or a bouquet outside the door. What is called "Besenwirtschaft" in Swabia is "Heckenwirtschaft" in Franconia, and "Strausswirtschaft" in Baden. The Zappendorfer Besenwirtschaft brings this tradition to the Saalekreis and the region of the Saale-Unstrut wine area — Europe's northernmost quality wine-growing region.
The venue is the BERGHOF, a traditional estate in the Zappendorf district of the Salzatal municipality. Here, the 'Besenwirtschaft' opens seasonally from 3 PM onwards and remains open into the evening. The charm lies in the combination: rustic courtyards, wooden benches, shady chestnut trees, simple regional cuisine — bread, lard, sausage, cheese — and good wines from the Saale-Unstrut region to accompany it.
The 'Besenwirtschaft' traditionally opens on Walpurgis Night / the beginning of May and closes on the Erntedank (Thanksgiving) weekend. Between May 1st and October 4th, 2026, it is open on selected weekends and public holidays. The season opening and closing weekends feature special programs — sometimes live music, sometimes small dance evenings, but always an expanded culinary offering. The 'Besenwirtschaft' is more than a gastronomic concept; it is living customs preservation.
The municipality of Salzatal is located in the Saalekreis, west of Halle, and is part of the wider Saale-Unstrut region. While the famous wine towns like Freyburg and Naumburg are in the Burgenlandkreis, the Saalekreis also cultivates its wine culture. Visitors to the Zappendorfer Besenwirtschaft should plan a day for the region — hikes between the Saale and Salza rivers, visits to the vineyards, and excursions to Halle (Saale) for its architecture.
The season runs for five months, with a focus on the warmer months of June, July, and August. The season opening on May 1st and the season closing on October 4th (Erntedank time) both feature an expanded program.
