Historic Christmas Market in front of Marienkapelle and Falkenhaus
For decades, the Würzburg Christmas Market has been one of Bavaria's most beautiful Christmas markets – and there's a simple reason for that: the setting. The market is located directly in front of two of Würzburg's most outstanding buildings: the late Gothic Marienkapelle (built 1377–1480, with its characteristic red-and-white sandstone pattern) and the magnificent Rococo Falkenhaus with its ornate stucco facade from 1751. Anyone standing at the mulled wine stand here and looking up will have a piece of World Heritage architecture right before their eyes.
Around 100 wooden huts are spread across the Oberer and Unterer Markt squares and Eichhornstraße. The range of goods is typical and extensive: handmade candles, pottery from the Spessart region, Franconian textiles, jewelry, wood carvings from the Erzgebirge, gingerbread from Nuremberg, Franconian bratwurst, roasted almonds, Franconian mulled wines (Bocksbeutel wine!), and of course, hot apple wine and punch in all variations. Würzburg is the capital of Franconian viticulture – accordingly high-quality is the mulled wine.
The stage hosts a program throughout the market period: Advent songs by school and community choirs, fairy tale performances for children, readings, live music. The highlight is the public Christmas carol sing-along – everyone joins in. Visits from St. Nicholas and candle-making demonstrations complement the family program.
On the four Advent weekends, the inner courtyard of the historic Würzburg Town Hall (Grafeneckart) becomes an Artists' Christmas Market: over 40 artists and craftspeople display and sell handmade jewelry, wooden toys, ceramics, paintings, prints, and textiles. An atmosphere that is significantly quieter and more exclusive than the hustle and bustle of the market square – perfect for unusual gifts.
Würzburg (around 127,000 inhabitants) is the largest city in Lower Franconia and the cultural capital of the Franconian wine region. The Würzburg Residence and its court gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage site, Marienberg Fortress towers over the city, and the Käppele crowns another hill. Würzburg is located on the Main River, about an hour's drive southeast of Frankfurt. During the Advent season, the Christmas market adds to a truly city-in-a-glow atmosphere.
It's quiet on weekday mornings; it gets crowded on weekends from late afternoon. If you want to experience the Artists' Christmas Market: it's only open Sat–Sun on the four Advent weekends. Würzburg is easily accessible by train – the main station is about a 10-minute walk from the market.
The 2026 edition of the Würzburg Christmas Market runs for almost four weeks and is a 'must-visit' on the Bavarian Christmas market circuit. Around 100 lovingly decorated wooden huts form a festive mile between Marienkapelle, Falkenhaus, and Eichhornstraße. The offerings are classically Franconian: mulled wine made from Franconian wine (Silvaner, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau mulled wines), bratwurst, roasted almonds, gingerbread, arts and crafts, and gift items.
Highlights 2026: the public Christmas carol sing-along in the town hall courtyard on December 20th at 6 PM, where all visitors can join in. On the four Advent weekends, the Artists' Christmas Market in the town hall courtyard features over 40 artists (jewelry, wooden toys, original art). The stage program includes choirs, fairy tale performances, readings, and live music throughout the market period.
