Flensburg, a city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, boasts a surprisingly rich slam scene — a result of its proximity to Kiel, Scandinavia, and the vibrant Kühlhaus socio-cultural scene. For years, Wort vor Ort has been the central event where stage literature, spoken word, and performance poetry converge at a high level.
The Kühlhaus as a Stage
The Kulturwerkstatt Kühlhaus in Flensburg's Neustadt (Mühlendamm 25) is a socio-cultural venue housed in a former industrial building. With its raw brick architecture, high ceilings, and atmospheric lighting, it provides the ideal setting for poetry slams — intimate enough for interludes and punchlines, yet large enough for over 200 spectators per evening.
Who Performs
Based on experience, the 2026 slammer lineups typically include:
- Established Slam Stars such as Luise Wolff, Andy Strauss, Fatih Serbest, Dajana Halse
- Regular Northern German Talents like Rune Vollbehr, Tim Jürgensen, Christina Kehles
- Newcomers from the in-house open mic series
- Moderation usually by Björn Högsdal, one of the most renowned moderators on the German slam scene
Format and Atmosphere
As with poetry slams everywhere: six to eight poets, six minutes of performance time each, an audience jury, one winner per evening. What makes Wort vor Ort special is the unusually attentive audience atmosphere — Flensburg has established itself as a "stronghold of true listeners," where punchlines are given time and more challenging pieces resonate. Texts range from political slams to love and relationship slams, and absurd comedy pieces.
Organizer Assemble ART
Assemble ART is the largest poetry slam organizer in Schleswig-Holstein, hosting regular events in Flensburg, Kiel, Neumünster, Sylt, and other cities. The Wort vor Ort series is the flagship event in Flensburg and ranks among the highest quality slam events in northern Germany.

Wort vor Ort returns in 2026 with several slam evenings at the Kühlhaus. The first dates, February 13th and April 10th, 2026, are confirmed; further dates will be added throughout the year on assembleart.com.

Structure of each Wort vor Ort evening at Flensburg's Kühlhaus:
Typical Slam Evening (Example February 13, 2026)
- 7:00 PM — Doors open at Kühlhaus, bar open
- 8:00 PM — Welcome by moderator Björn Högsdal and introduction of the slam poets
- 8:15 PM — First Round: 6 slam poets, 6 minutes each, audience jury scoring
- 9:30 PM — Intermission with bar and open mic sign-up
- 10:00 PM — Final Round: Top 3 from the first round, 6 minutes of new text each
- 10:45 PM — Award ceremony and book prize raffle
- 11:00 PM — Bar remains open, artist talks
Specific lists of slam poets for each date will be published approximately 4 weeks in advance. Prominent guests from the national scene regularly appear.

Getting There
Flensburg Central Station is a 10-minute walk from the Kühlhaus. By car, take the A7 motorway (exit Flensburg). Parking is available at the harbor and near the Kühlhaus.

Available via Eventim or at the box office — advance tickets typically range from €12–€18, with a small surcharge at the box office. Reservations are recommended, as some dates sell out.

Texts may contain explicit themes — slam poets speak openly about politics, sexuality, drugs, and grief. Recommended for ages 16 and up.
