27 Years of Queer Summer Tradition
The LesBiSchwules Parkfest originated in 1998 as a small neighborhood festival for queer associations in Volkspark Friedrichshain — today it is one of Berlin's largest queer open-air festivals and traditionally marks the closing festival of the Berlin CSD season, which culminates each year at the end of July with the big demonstration through the city center. The Parkfest is a relaxed way to end the summer: not a demonstration format, but a relaxed, intergenerational gathering on picnic blankets.
Stage, Drag, DJs, and Open-Air Cinema
Programmatically, the day is divided into several axes: a main stage in the open-air cinema with live shows by queer artists, drag acts, and sets by queer DJs; a market stall area with over 50 queer associations, NGOs, counseling services, and commercial providers; a cozy picnic area on the lawn in front; and from the late evening, an open-air film program. The festival is organized under the leadership of LSVD Berlin-Brandenburg together with a broad consortium of queer associations from the capital.
Volkspark Friedrichshain — Berlin's Oldest Public Park
The festival takes place on the open-air cinema grounds in Volkspark Friedrichshain, Berlin's oldest and one of its most beautiful public parks. The park is located between the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Pankow in the state of Berlin and is an important queer meeting point even outside of the park festival — Berlin's queer history has been written between Tiergarten, Tempelhof, and Friedrichshain.
6,000 Visitors and Free Entry
With around 6,000 visitors, the Parkfest is one of the largest regular queer summer festivals in Germany. Free entry — this is more than a practical detail, it's part of the program: the festival should be accessible to everyone, regardless of income or life situation. Bus 200 and tram lines M5, M6, and M10 stop within a five-minute walk of the festival grounds.
Politics Remains — Even in a Feel-Good Format
Even though the Parkfest deliberately focuses on a feel-good atmosphere, its political core is visible at every edition: posters for acceptance and against discrimination, info booths on hate crime, queer rights, and self-determination. LSVD also uses the festival to place socio-political discourse in a low-threshold framework — diversity-affirming, without demonstration pressure.
