Hygge, Heart & Sparkle — the Scandinavian-influenced Christmas market on the bay
Flensburg is located in the far north of Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Flensburger Förde, just a few kilometers from the Danish border. The geographical and cultural proximity to Scandinavia — Denmark to the north, Sweden and Norway across the Baltic Sea — has shaped the city's identity for centuries. At the Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt, this Scandinavian DNA becomes particularly visible: 'Hygge, Herz & Lichterglanz' (Hygge, Heart & Sparkle) is the motto — three words that perfectly capture the Nordic way of life.
Unlike centralized large markets, the Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt is spread across four market areas in the historic old town — all within walking distance of each other:
The stall offerings deliberately focus on Nordic-inspired huts: made of light pine wood, with red and white accents, decorated with fir wreaths and star motifs. Around 60 stalls offer:
A Flensburg original and a must-visit stop on any market tour: the 'World's Smallest Bar'. A tiny bar, decorated with fabric and lights, right in the middle of the market bustle, traditionally serving Tallinpunsch — a strong, aromatic punch concoction. The queue is legendary, the punch unmistakable, and the experience a classic photo opportunity.
Flensburg is an independent city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and, with around 90,000 inhabitants, one of the state's largest cities. The Tourismus Agentur Flensburger Förde GmbH (TAFF) organizes the Christmas market as a central city marketing event. Visitors to the market should ideally combine it with a tour of Flensburg's old town — with its cobblestone alleys, historic merchant courtyards (e.g., the famous Holm merchant courtyard), and the harbor with its museum ships.
The 2026 edition runs from November 16 to December 30, 2026 — six weeks of market season from the pre-Christmas period until just before New Year's Eve. Four market areas will be active in the old town:
The stall offerings comprise about 60 Nordic-inspired huts featuring crafts, artisanal products, mulled wine, punch, and regional as well as Scandinavian specialties. Thematic focus varies across the different market squares.
Live music and small stage performances on Advent weekends — details will be published on the tourism website.
Free admission to the market area. Mulled wine/punch approx. €4–5 per cup plus deposit. Tallinpunsch at the World's Smallest Bar at the daily price. Food and handicrafts priced individually by stall.
Monday–Saturday 11:00 AM–10:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM–8:00 PM. Christmas Eve (December 24th) until 2:00 PM. Closed: November 22nd (Totensonntag - Sunday of the Dead) and December 25th–26th.
Train: Flensburg Hauptbahnhof (main station), then a 10-minute walk to the old town. Car: A7 motorway, Flensburg exit, parking garages at the harbor and in the old town. Public transport is also well-connected, with several bus lines to the old town.
