About Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt

For six weeks, Flensburg's old town transforms into one of Northern Germany's most Scandinavian-influenced Christmas markets. Around 60 Nordic-inspired stalls gather on Holm, Nordermarkt, Südermarkt, and Große Straße — offering crafts, regional artisanal products, and culinary specialties from Tallinpunsch to Glögg. The open market concept extends throughout the old town — featuring the famous 'World's Smallest Bar', a Scandinavian classic, and short strolls to the Danish border.

Where Germany Becomes Nordic

Flensburg is located in the far north of Schleswig-Holstein, directly on the Flensburger Förde, just a few kilometers from the Danish border. The geographical and cultural proximity to Scandinavia — Denmark to the north, Sweden and Norway across the Baltic Sea — has shaped the city's identity for centuries. At the Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt, this Scandinavian DNA becomes particularly visible: 'Hygge, Herz & Lichterglanz' (Hygge, Heart & Sparkle) is the motto — three words that perfectly capture the Nordic way of life.

Four Market Areas in the Old Town

Unlike centralized large markets, the Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt is spread across four market areas in the historic old town — all within walking distance of each other:

  • Holm — the main shopping street between Nordermarkt and Südermarkt, with Nordic-inspired huts and craft stalls
  • Nordermarkt — the historic square with sculptures and a maritime atmosphere
  • Südermarkt — a compact market area (open until December 23rd)
  • Große Straße — the connecting axis with additional stalls and lighting

Around 60 Huts, a Nordic Concept

The stall offerings deliberately focus on Nordic-inspired huts: made of light pine wood, with red and white accents, decorated with fir wreaths and star motifs. Around 60 stalls offer:

  • Scandinavian and North German handicrafts (ceramics, woodwork, knitwear, jewelry)
  • Regional culinary delights (smoked fish, bacon, regional sausage and cheese specialties)
  • Christmas culinary delights (mulled wine, punch, Glögg, roasted almonds, crêpes)
  • Scandinavian specialties (smoked salmon, Danish hot dogs, Swedish Pepparkakor)

The 'World's Smallest Bar' with Tallinpunsch

A Flensburg original and a must-visit stop on any market tour: the 'World's Smallest Bar'. A tiny bar, decorated with fabric and lights, right in the middle of the market bustle, traditionally serving Tallinpunsch — a strong, aromatic punch concoction. The queue is legendary, the punch unmistakable, and the experience a classic photo opportunity.

Flensburg — an Independent City in the Far North

Flensburg is an independent city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and, with around 90,000 inhabitants, one of the state's largest cities. The Tourismus Agentur Flensburger Förde GmbH (TAFF) organizes the Christmas market as a central city marketing event. Visitors to the market should ideally combine it with a tour of Flensburg's old town — with its cobblestone alleys, historic merchant courtyards (e.g., the famous Holm merchant courtyard), and the harbor with its museum ships.

Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt — edition 2026

The Flensburger Weihnachtsmarkt 2026 runs from November 16 to December 30, 2026, in the historic old town. Around 60 Nordic-inspired huts are spread across Holm, Nordermarkt, Große Straße (full season), and Südermarkt (until December 23rd). Highlights include the 'World's Smallest Bar' with Tallinpunsch, Scandinavian cuisine, and a Hygge atmosphere.

Six Weeks of Christmas Market on the Bay

The 2026 edition runs from November 16 to December 30, 2026 — six weeks of market season from the pre-Christmas period until just before New Year's Eve. Four market areas will be active in the old town:

  • Südermarkt — from Nov 16 to Dec 23, 2026 (compact area, closes before Christmas Eve)

Stall Offerings: Around 60 Huts
