Classical music highlights of the SHMF on the Danish border
The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) was founded in 1986 by Justus Frantz and Leonard Bernstein and is now one of the most internationally renowned classical music festivals in Europe. Over approximately eight weeks, more than 200 concerts are spread across the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as Hamburg, Denmark, and northern Lower Saxony.
The Deutsches Haus is a historic civic and concert hall in the city center of Flensburg, the largest city in northern Schleswig-Holstein, right on the Danish border. With its large hall, it is particularly suitable for orchestral and vocal concerts. It is one of the established SHMF venues and is used every year for selected festival highlights.
The 41st festival edition, from July 4 to August 30, 2026, comprises around 205 concerts in 120 venues and 73 locations. International stars such as Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, Daniil Trifonov, Grigory Sokolov, and the Swedish pop band Roxette are on the program. In 2026, a special focus will be on Swedish musical culture, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and works by Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar.
With around 90,000 inhabitants, Flensburg is Germany's northernmost city and an important center of German-Danish cultural life. The Flensburg concerts of the SHMF regularly sell out quickly and attract audiences from both sides of the border. The SHMF Festival Orchestra, comprising over 100 young musicians from around the world, is a central element of the festival and also performs in Flensburg.
The Flensburg concerts of the SHMF 2026 fall on two Sunday evenings in August. Both concerts begin at 7:30 PM in the grand hall of the Deutsches Haus. The concerts are part of the 41st festival edition from July 4 to August 30, 2026, with a focus on Swedish music and the celebration of Mozart's 270th birthday.
