Whit Monday at the historic windmill

The Bergmühle Flensburg is a historic Dutch windmill on the edge of Flensburg's Sandberg district, near the Flensburg Fjord. It was built in the 19th century and is now one of Flensburg's most recognizable landmarks. The Mühlentag traditionally takes place on Whit Monday and is the mill's most important public event of the year.

Programme and Atmosphere

The Mühlentag is a family day with North German tradition:

  • 10:00 AM: Festive church service with Pastor Babette Lorenzen
  • All day: Mill tours explaining the workings of the Dutch windmill
  • Tombola to support the mill's preservation
  • Mill shop with freshly ground bread, oat flakes, grains, and mill oil
  • 1:00 PM: Performance by the Handwerker- und Bäckersänger-Chor Flensburg
  • 3:30 PM PM: Live music with "Final 4 Music" (Blues, Rock, Swing)
  • Mill garden with a terrace for coffee, cake, soup, and grilled food
  • Children's games and a wheel of fortune for the youngest visitors

Organiser: Association for the Preservation of the Bergmühle

The Verein zur Erhaltung der Bergmühle e.V. (Association for the Preservation of the Bergmühle) voluntarily takes care of the mill's preservation and maintenance. The proceeds from the Mühlentag (tombola, mill shop, food) go directly towards the preservation of the structure. The day is part of the nationwide German Mill Day, when mills across the country open their doors on Whit Monday.

Region: City of Flensburg, Sandberg District

Flensburg, with around 90,000 inhabitants, is Germany's northernmost city and is located directly on the Danish border. The Sandberg district, home to the Bergmühle, is southwest of the city centre on a slight elevation. The mill is now a landmark of the district and a popular excursion destination beyond the city limits. The Mühlentag combines Flensburg's identity, Whit Monday tradition, and North German mill culture in one day.

The 2026 edition takes place on Whit Monday, May 25, from 10 AM to 5 PM. The day starts at 10 AM with a festive church service, where Pastor Babette Lorenzen will deliver the sermon. Afterwards, the mill opens its doors for tours.
