Indoor ice rink, curling, and Christmas market between RAW and East Side Gallery
Winterquartier launched in 2025 as a new Advent format at the Napoleon Komplex on Modersohnstraße in Friedrichshain. Unlike established Berlin Christmas markets, it focuses on a combination of an indoor ice rink, Christmas market, and cultural program — a weatherproof alternative to the mostly open-air marketplaces. Its location between the RAW site and East Side Gallery makes it appealing to an urban, younger audience.
The 1,000 m² ice surface is the heart of the Winterquartier concept. On-site skate rental, heated pavilions around the rink, regular ice discos with light shows, and DJ sets on weekends. Alongside this, curling — an alpine sport rarely found elsewhere in Berlin. Both activities can be booked for individual times.
The Christmas market at the entrance offers handmade gifts, seasonal food, and drinks. Focus: smaller Berlin manufacturers, less of a mass-stand atmosphere than on downtown markets. Mulled wine, bratwurst, crêpes, gingerbread — the classics, complemented by international street food options from Friedrichshain's culinary scene.
What sets Winterquartier apart from a pure ice rink format: a curated cultural program. Children's program with hands-on activities and small stage performances (Mon, Wed, Sun 5–6 PM), ice discos on weekends, occasional late-night DJ sets. Live music and theatre will be expanded for the 2026/2027 season.
Friedrichshain holds a special position in Berlin's Advent calendar — more alternative and younger than the commercial tourist markets at Gendarmenmarkt or Alexanderplatz. The RAW site simultaneously hosts its own Advent formats, and the historical Christmas at the RAW site also runs within the quarter. Those exploring Friedrichshain during Advent can combine Winterquartier, the RAW Advent market, the Boxhagener Platz Advent market, and the East Side Gallery in one tour.
The 2026 edition builds on the successful first year in 2025. The organizer is Winterquartier Berlin in cooperation with the operators of Napoleon Komplex. The ice rink remains the central offering, the Christmas market element will be expanded, and the cultural program enhanced with additional concerts and theatre performances in the late afternoon.
Specific opening dates, admission prices, and program details will be published on the website in October 2026. Previous year's pattern: Opening on the 1st Advent weekend, main operation until December 23rd, break on Dec 24+25, then reopening Dec 26th to New Year's Eve, optionally a few days in January.
