Friedrichshain Neighbourhood Festival at Rudolfplatz for the Neighbourhood Week
The Neighbourhood Week is a city-wide initiative in Berlin that brings together dozens of neighbourhood festivals across the city every year in late May or early June. "Rudolf trifft Haase" is Friedrichshain's contribution from the neighbourhood around Haase Street and Rudolf Street – a residential area in the Friedrichshain district (Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough) stretching between Frankfurter Allee and Boxhagener Platz. The organizer is the RuDi Neighbourhood House, which has been a hub for community interaction and local projects in the neighbourhood for years.
The festival focuses on hands-on activities rather than a big stage. Highlights for children include giant soap bubble stations and the barefoot path – a sensory course to walk through with bare feet. There are also gardening projects, the BiboBike from the Pablo Neruda Library (a cargo bike library with books and hammocks for on-site borrowing), the "Zukunftsstadt" (Future City) project by Omas for Future, and the participatory circus Zack with juggling and acrobatics workshops.
The music programme is curated by the RuDi Neighbourhood House: live music, often featuring Berlin bands or school classes, and dance activities for all age groups. The event runs compactly from 3 PM to 7 PM – no evening programme, but a full afternoon event for families with children.
2026 will see the fifth edition of the festival. What started as a small initiative in the neighbourhood has become a firm fixture in Friedrichshain's May calendar. Admission is free, public transport is strongly recommended – Rudolfplatz is located in a densely populated residential area, and parking is difficult.
The festival runs compactly over four afternoon hours on Rudolfplatz and the adjacent Haasestraße. The hands-on stations are set up separately – families can take turns at the circus, barefoot path, and soap bubbles, and read books in hammocks at the Pablo Neruda Library's BiboBike in between.
The concept clearly focuses on low-threshold community interaction: parents meet parents, children meet children, and the RuDi Neighbourhood House presents itself as a point of contact. The music programme remains relatively small – a small stage, often featuring school children, Berlin singer-songwriters, or small bands – and is clearly subordinate to the participatory character.
